If I recall, the 0-60 for both these cars are the same, so it could go either way... I suppose the M5 would have longer legs though, if there is enough road to find out.

01:26.9 Lexus IS-F
01:26.9 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG

Incredible that such an old car managed to practically keep up with much more modern sports cars. Everything faster is basically a super car. Impressive.

Cars slower:

01:27:0 KTM X-Bow (Driven by new Stig)
01:27.1 Aston Martin Vanquish S
01:27.1 Aston Martin DB9
01:27.2 Porsche 911 GT3 (996) (very wet; last car tested by Black Stig prior to HMS Invincible "incident")
01:27.2 Tesla Roadster (mildly moist)
01:27.3 Spyker C8 Spyder (with hard top)
01:27.4 Aston Martin DBS (wet)
01:27.5 Audi RS5 (moist)
01:27.5 Nissan 370Z GT

The fact a 370Z couldn't do it faster is pretty sad, lol.
Personally, I wouldn't trust any of the test results Top Gear puts out.
They've been caught producing results they want before and there is no way E46 M3 is slower than a 760Li and a 535d

agreed, top gear numbers just dont add up. way too many examples to list.

also, f1 drivers half a second apart from each other in the exact same car? ok.

i walk on e46 m3's all day. a stock e39 m5 would take me on the highway 100% of the time.

That doesn't mean the M3 is faster because it's not.

Stock for stock the M5 is faster... in the 1320 it's got on a bad day 5mph on the big end and .5 sec faster ET then the E46 M3.

just because you smoked one driver ...its not indicative of how quick or slow they are overall.

Ok. At an ovaral avarage stock m5 makes 325 hp rwh@ 3800lb and a m3 at an avarage 275hp rwh @ 3300lb .ill take a the 50 hp loss then the 500 lbs that's added to the m5.

That's pretty much what it comes down to.... I've never driven the e46 m3, but I bet it's just as sweet a drive as my M5. Like Sabine says, it would be nice if the M5 is lighter. I can totally understand that statement when I'm on a track - esp a tight one. I used to feel that it was time to trade in the M5 for a M3 or S2000, but the more track time and practice I get, the more impressed I feel about the heavy M5... all things considered, it's pretty damn good!

I've got 3 kids and like somebody mentioned earlier... Family > M5, Bachelor > M3

Just curious - Quite often, I get followed home or catch people admiring my car in a parking lot and everyone asks if I want to sell. Do E46 M3 drivers get that too?

Exactly, it's just personal preference. I'm not married, my reason for the M5 is that glorious, torquey V8 and the fact that they're not as common as the E46... I've had plenty of opportunities to ride and drive E46 M3s over the past several years. They're great cars. That said, l'll have a track-prepped Corolla anyday of the week over an E46 M3.

Throw on an aggressive set of coilovers and a proper alignment w/ good tires, and the E39 can be shockingly fun in the twisties. Mine doesn't even feel like the same car as it was when stock, but nowhere near as sharp as the Careless Whisper.

Doubt it. E46 M3s are on every corner, lol.

The M5 is still faster all day, every day.

I get complements all the time whether in the parking lot, or stopped at a light.

As far as bhp, my E46 dyno'd in at 297bhp with the only mod being a K&N Series 57 CAI...with a same skill level driver I don't think a stock M5 could outrun me, maybe I'm wrong though.

Mine made 280 rwhp I had no problem. and the m5 had exhaust done.
But I like the m5 though.!!

Driver =/= car

You can argue semantics all you want, but at the end of the day stock for stock the M5 is quite a bit faster than an M3. It's always been that way and probably always will be.
