Damn.... I'm really tempted to chop off my mufflers! I drove another members m5 with straight pipes. It revs more freely and is very quiet with the windows closed.... But the sound outside was just awesome!

As for m3 vs m5 .... I'm kinda biased. M5 is definitely heavier, but I didn't really find that an issue till I went to the track. However, I'm getting more used to the car and I'm really amazed at how balanced this behemoth is. This thing has a lot of potential!

I think the m5 will outrun the m3 on every contest except a tight course. M3 and 540 are about the same on the highway so the m5 would pull away from either.

if the e46 m3 had a nice looking 4 door version. But i do wonder whats the differences between the e46 m3 and e39 m5 lap time is on the nurburgring. I know the e46 does it in like 8:22 or something around there

Sabine Schmidt (the Ring taxi girl) clocked in at 8:16.

On Top Gear, it lapped their track at 1:27:0. Cars ahead:

01:26.2 BMW M5 (E60)
01:26.2 Porsche 911 Carrera S (997 ) (damp)
01:26.2 Brabus S Biturbo Roadster
01:26.3 Vauxhall VXR8 Bathurst S
01:26.4 Lotus Exige (mildly moist)
01:26.5 BMW M3 E92 Competition Pack (moist)
01:26.7 Porsche Cayman S[6]
01:26.7 Jaguar XFR
01:26.8 Chevrolet Corvette C6 LS2
01:26.8 Aston Martin V12 Vantage (Not Shown on TV)[4]
01:26.8 Ferrari 575M Maranello GTC
01:26.9 Lexus IS-F
01:26.9 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG

Incredible that such an old car managed to practically keep up with much more modern sports cars. Everything faster is basically a super car. Impressive.

Cars slower:

01:27:0 KTM X-Bow (Driven by new Stig)
01:27.1 Aston Martin Vanquish S
01:27.1 Aston Martin DB9
01:27.2 Porsche 911 GT3 (996) (very wet; last car tested by Black Stig prior to HMS Invincible "incident")
01:27.2 Tesla Roadster (mildly moist)
01:27.3 Spyker C8 Spyder (with hard top)
01:27.4 Aston Martin DBS (wet)
01:27.5 Audi RS5 (moist)
01:27.5 Nissan 370Z GT

The fact a 370Z couldn't do it faster is pretty sad, lol.

Don't get me wrong I have a soft spot for the E46 M3, it's IMO a great combo of looks and power/technology (dat engine!).

But since I already have a fun/project car... I have had this itch for a V8 powered car for some time now so for me it's an easy pick. M5 > M3.

E39 m5 is nice but u better have big pockets just wait till u get solenoid faults and secondary air faults ;-)
If u dont get those your a happy camper overall there great cars
As for m3 just avoild early production cars not to many problems with m3 e46

Interview is awesome! Nice find!

Yeah.... - where does the M3 place in that list? I'm going to guess slower since this car is faster by 0.5:

01:26.5 BMW M3 E92 Competition Pack (moist)

I came up to a Countach at a set of lights last week.... I was tempted to give it a run... I didn't do it. That's a classic car that doesn't need to prove anything anyway...
