I believe if I'm not mistaken the original formula had to be revealed due to patent expiration. that is why they produced the "new" coke and called the old coke "classic" they had to change the formula since anyone now had privy to this information and could duplicate the product. they tried to keep this hush hush back in the day when it was announced.
