Centra 8's - finally!

So, I'm sure a handful of you recall a time when my vert was wearing a nasty set of 15"x6" Eagle Alloys. A time I'd like to forget, but it happened, and I can't do anything about it.

I thought since I've recently put on a new set of rims, that maybe I'd throw up some shots of the old shitbox, but there's seems to be a time that I didn't put a camera in my hands for quite a while. Regardless, I'll throw a little timeline together if I can.

Early days with the vert, circa, I don't know. Like 8 years ago when I go her I guess. It came on a set of decent 14"x6.5" basketweaves and a minty spare weave in the trunk, but for some reason I though these looked better.

So, I don't know what happened next, but I found myself buying weaves. A few different sets, and off went the Eagle Alloys, in favour of a set of BBS RJ360's. Rare and direct fit. 15"x7" ET24, 57.1 hub. They were off an E30 that was imported here many moons ago, only to lose its life apparently, while it's wheels found their way into my hands. Love em, but I never put the caps on them out of fear of losing one or having them stolen. So, I wore out the rubber and threw my RA1's on 'em, and the track is the only place you'll see them, and that's a rare sighting in it's self.

Not long after the BBS's came off, I threw on a set of Ronal LS's (15" x 7.5" ET25. Love the wheels, and luckily the tires were hockey pucks, so I managed to get some longevity out of these, but hardly any pics. Classic E30 wheel, and will probably be finding their way onto my Mom's E30 in the near future.

I had a found a set of BBS RZ's in Kitchener that needed some love, and I snapped them up on a chance that they could be fixed. One was bent fairly badly, but the right shop took care of the bend, and re-machined the lips and turned into lovely set of Euroweaves. Basic and clean, but a very nice set of rims to look at. Managed to score a spare for the trunk for good measure too.

So those came off a few days ago since the rubber was all but gone. So I look around the basement to see what I could find next. (No, leave the ACS's they're Rob's). Minty hardly ever touched bottle caps? No! Go back to the Ronals? No, too heavy. Send the RJ's out for refinishing? No, then I'd need track rims again. Eagles are gone, those old ASA's are long gone, the Rondells are gone, and those communal white 5 star wheels are gone too, and the basketweaves are somewhere in the garage maybe?

Ugly Centra 8's that might be too ugly to ever use?!! Yep

So, these Centra 8's came from a friends e30 many many moons ago, back when we were tapping bumpers at stop lights in our old '86 325e's. He was using them for winters, and sold them to me for next to nothing. I used them on my GF's e30 as winter wheels for a season, then stripped the rubber and never really had any plans set in stone for them.

They had been in the back of my mind for years, and I still have thoughts of keeping the original theme of these wheels as a full on project, but I don't have the money for windsplits and 3-piece spoilers, not to mention the terrible body kit that wouldn't fit the very anyways. So I found an old pic of these things, all yellowing and nasty. Officially, they are Centra Style 8's. In white trim, they are meant for the Kamei X1 kits of the mid 80's. These time capsuls are dated 1985.

Ugly then and ugly now, they were used on VW's and BMW's to trim the X1 body kits, and even managed to find their way into a plastic model.

So off to the tire shop for some new rubber, then off to Home Hardware for a few cans of Plastidip. A few hours of prep and painting, they were drying in the garage and waiting to be mounted. Two of these babies actually balanced without weights!!

Behold the Centra 8 / Kamei X1 rims (15"x7" ET26 - needs spacers).

Take em or leave em. I like them. Been looking at weaves for too long, so this is a pleasant change for me, and long awaited. Enjoy!

The awesome outweighs the ugly. As long as you have a clean car ugly wheels make them all the better.
