I have found changing the oil and air filter and a good drive helps before doing drive clean.
my car also passed boarder line and suspect it could be the cat. I mean...lets face it. 20+ years they do tend to give up.lol. we'll see what mine reads in a couple months.

So technically this morning I didn't fail!... because I never actually tested the car

The guy at the shop put the machine into diagnostic mode so I could see what the sniffer was reading at idle. I played with my fuel and timing and was only able to get the HC down to 700ish (which is half of what it was before ~1400) while still keeping the CO below 1.0.

I'm pretty much attributing the high HC readings to the lack of ability of my cheap aftermarket cat to oxidize hydrocarbons.

Time for a conditional pass I guess

I don't know if they do conditional passes anymore. Put a stock BMW exhaust on it and then re-test it.

Also, did you get my e-mail?

They do, I don't know if every shop is different but the one I went to (midas) said if they diagnose that the repairs are over $450 and you refuse, they will give you a conditional.
Update: narrowed it down to cap and rotor, or ecu....

Well! Heres a fun update!
Did a compression test, and 3 cylinders had compression below 120
1 cylinder was at 40

Did a leakdown test on the cylinder with 40 and a burnt exhaust valve was the culprit.
Did a head rebuild, found out the cam and rockers were brand new! So something good came of that....

Did another etest this morning and it passed on 2500 rpm but failed on idle.
Idle control valve? Any suggestions?

Oxygen sensor is brand new, cap and rotor is only 4 years old, wires are......okay?

Got any friends who do e-testing? Get them to do a "diagnostic test" so that they can "determine" that the car needs a new cat (which is like $800 from the dealer) then get the conditional pass under the repair cost limit rule.

You have to pay for an e-test, then the diagnostic test, and the re-test. It ends up costing like $80 and you're good to go for another two years.

Not really, I would rather pass legit. Could it be the icv? Also I had to get a different throttle body due to a coolant leak, and had to plug on of the ports on the side with a washer/bolt and rtv to get rid of the massive vacuum leak.....could it be a small vacuum leak?
