18 - 1996-1998 BMW 328i Sedan Manual (CD33) - NA painted in Bright Red (314) with Black Casual Montana Leather (P7SW) interior were built for the Canadian market.

74 were built for the US market.

The most rare option on this car is the option S288A - BMW light alloy wheel, cross spoke. It was installed on 169 out of 9,843 cars.

A small batch of 328i sedans was built in Spartanburg, USA

Here are the stats for them

1 - 1996 BMW 328i Sedan Manual (CD13) - NA painted in Bright Red (314) with Black Casual Montana Leather (P7SW) interior were built for the Canadian market.

6 were built for the US market.

P.S. Did you change your wheels? Option code S288A was only used on the Canadian cars. I'm trying to figure out what wheel style it represents.

I bought the car in 2006 and it came with those wheels. I just looked up the original wheels S288A, they are multi spoke light alloy, style 29.

Style 29 is not correct. BMW recycles option codes and sometimes reports the wrong option description in the VIN decoder.
I did some research and it appears that S288A is style 42, so your wheels are correct.

Thanks, good to know. When it says 74 were built for the US market, does it mean the car is pretty rare?

I wouldn't say rare, more like uncommon.
