2006 M3 Known Issues

Hi Everyone,
Thinking of picking up a 2006 M3. Just wondering what I should look for in terms of common issues with this model year?
Is Sub-Frame still an issue for this model year?

For people who owns M3, could you please share some light on the reliability of M3?

Thanks

T

So far it has been trouble free for me. Only regular maintenance items are needed.

Me too, 50k of hard tracked miles on mine and all I do is regular maintenance. When I bought the car, I had to do the rear main seal, which required me to pull the tranny. When I reinstalled it and programmed the SMG adaptations, the pump would not pass tolerances and had to be replaced (kinda sucked since it was working fine). When I installed my aftermarket Schrick cams, the VANOS also would not pass adaptations, so it was replaced. Same reason, other then those 2 things (and subframe reinforcements) the car is incredibly reliable!

Most has been answered already above but a PPI would be great atleast you would have peace of mind that it was checked before you purchase it. Also check if they have service records specially if all recalls/service has been performed. Also if it has i-drive it's prone to failing you might need a new CCC

Some more expensive repairs are SMG pumps, vanos and A/C compressor leaks. Front control arms are also expensive. After 150k, the only thing that had been replaced on mine was a front control arm. It still has the original pads and rotors.

Funny this just happened to me...also had an 80ish year old woman try to take me off the line in a Suzuki a couple weeks ago...she had the most mischevious grin on her face and I couldn't figure out why until the light changed and she gunned it!

I was heading home from the gym yesterday. A smart @$$ driving a 96 Civic coupe was driving 2 inches behind my bumper for a couple blocks.

Whenever anyone does that to me on any roads, my immedidate reaction is to slightly step on the brake pedal with my left foot so the brake lights is on and back him up.

Cab's are noticeably slower than a coupe... It's almost disgusting.
