2002 E46 325CI knocking sound

Hey guys,

I am new to this forum. Hoping that someone out there can give me some advice.

My 2002 E46 coupe has been giving me this knocking sound when i come to a complete stop as i hit the brakes. It feels as if i hear a "dong!" sound when i brake quickly. When i brake gradually, sometimes i hear it sometimes i don't.

My local mechanic said it could be possibly be a DME/Transmission controller reset/update - not too sure what is that. Any explanation from you guys will be helpful.

Some quick details on the car. Everything is original. have about close to 66000km on it at the moment. No mods.

Should i bring it in to the dealership or can anyone specialzing in BMW can do the DME/Transmission controller reset/updated.

I am located in Toronto, Ontario.

Thanks in advance guys.

Cheers!

Where is the sound coming from?

If you want a BMW specialist, take it to RMP Motors.

Seem to be coming from the rear of the vehicle?
Its like when the gear is down shifting from 2 to 1, you hear that "dong!" sound.

Thanks for the intro to RMP. I will check them out.

Does it make a dong sound like a bell or a clunck sound? A clunck could mean a torn sub frame, but usually just normal for the differential.

It could also be an issue with your rear brakes.
