The old school way was to check the pedals LOL, rubber pattern is usually rubbed off smooth over like 160K.
Yeah, that was back in the day! Now i see it all the time that a WELL kept car with 200-300K will look like it has 120K. Same goes for mechanical. So now my rule is buy something with records, and never be afraid of well maintained high milage cars.

I hate to scare you, but this kind of things happen ALL the time, so you have to be smart when buying used! Just do your checks, make sure it has records, and you buy from someone reputable! Too many shady characters...

Just a note, dealers do not need to provide a UVIP.

Hmmm... I don't believe replacing the cluster triggers the tamper indicator.
There are tons of used clusters for sale and all one would have to do is swap in a lower mileage cluster... Magic! Car just lost mileage! nothing was "rolled back" and no "tampering" indication... If the VIN is on the cluster somewhere it is in behind, but I have pulled mine to fix a cold solder joint on the speedo and I never noticed it. Even if it was a big plate, how many people pull the cluster before buying? (how many sellers would let you?!)

Dave if your interested hit me up, or anyone else looking for a car of this caliber (E46 M3 AA Level 1 S/C, AA full exhaust system, KWs etc)

P.S I saw you in an online interview!

jamrobin,

You named only 1 out of X places your mileage is stored in that vehicle. If all of them do not match you will get a tamper dot, if you just start the vehicle it may not appear until the mileage counter clicks.

Ah... I have pulled the cluster on an E39, an E30, and an E36 but I always put it back in the same car after fixing the intermittent speedo connection (on 3 out of 5 BMWs I've had!) so it's not been triggered.

I had actually considered replacing the cluster in one of my E36s that's in miles (with km in the inner ring) for a Canadian one in km only... Seems to me that you're saying this would cause a tamper indication? Is this well known?

There are at least 8 or 9 E36 clusters local on kijiji at any time and dozens on e-bay. Does every cluster swap throw a code? ...and what is the telltale? I ask because I'm thinking of picking up a third E36 when my daughter gets her G2 and takes my nice cheap commuter 318iS and want to know what to look for.

I might be wrong, but I don't think E36 has temper dot function on cluster, only E39, E46 and 97 and up E38 have them, and everything comes after.
