Cautionary Tale...another kill story

Cautionary Tale...another kill story

Police believe excessive speed was a factor in a crash that left a Calgary man clinging to life in hospital Friday.

A battered BMW is pulled onto a tow truck on the northbound ramp off Deerfoot Tr. to westbound Memorial Dr. Friday. A 26-year-old man was taken to hospital with critical life-threatening injuries from the early-morning crash.

The crash happened about 5:15 a.m. when a late model BMW was travelling northbound on Deerfoot Tr. turning onto the westbound on-ramp for Memorial Dr. when it appears the car mounted the grass berm and crashed head-on into the cement abutment of the bridge, said Sgt. Daran Wood.

Firefighters had to cut the 26-year-old driver out of the car after he became trapped from the impact, and he was taken to hospital in life threatening condition.

Wood said police are investigating excessive speed as a factor in the collision.

“We have witnesses that had him going fairly fast on Deerfoot Tr. prior to the collision, in excess of 140 km/h, — at this point we don’t know that for sure we are just investigating that,” he said.

“Our reconstructionist at the scene believes speed was the primary cause but we’ll have to wait and see there are other things we are looking at as well that we cross off as a matter of course in the investigation.”

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

But the factor of excessive speed, on the city’s busiest roadway, is a public safety concern to police.

“With the gravel on the side of the road as well it basically becomes ice for vehicles at his time of the year, it’s very, very slippery,” he said.

well...., you can see the crumple zone did it's job. even though he had to be cut out. he'd probably be dead if he were driving something else. probably suffering internal bleeding from the seat belt and a friggin huge headache from the multiple air bags that went off. Hope he survives. if he does, it may bring new meaning to his life.
