could be a number of things. check the fuel pressure regulator; check pump for adequate fuel pressure.
the fuel gauge problem may be a loose nut on the back of the gauge. tighten it down.

The nut on the back gauge is tight!

then it is probably a faulty gauge - which you'll need to replace. OR...If you're fuel level switch in the tank is bad it may cause you to get a false reading on the gauge. And if that filter in the tank is clogged it may delay fuel delivery to the injectors.
Try changing your fuel filter first. cheapest and easiest fix first.

you might have a problem with the SI board inside the cluster. batteries usually go in those.
but you still haven't checked the sending unit in the gas tank have you?

Sending unit in fuel tank for guage problem. Change the fuel pump and regulator for startup issues.

I had the exact same problem with my old e30 sedan. It was the fuel pump being on its way out.

Hey my 87 320i was doing the same thing...I fixed it by polishing up the grounding point next to the battery...it didn't look corroded and was very secure...but hitting it with some emery cloth made a huge difference in how the car starts....try it it's free

So!
Have changing the sending unit.. the gauge flick again!
Startup issues:
Change the fuel pump, polishing the ground. The problem is not solved. I think change the fuel regulator

used fuel pumps are cheap, and very easy to replace.
as for the flicking gauge, it's all part of the beauty of E30 ownership.
I fix it with a heavyhanded whack to the dashboard.
