powersteering upgrade?

Hi,

I think my rack is scrap, because when I turn my steering, I feel some loose.
I can turn my steering and my wheel don't turn. I have do some search.
I can swap a e36 rack or z3 rack? I want manual ps.

I installed a Z3 rack and deleted my power steering with the Condor Speed Shop PS delete.

you might just have a worn/damaged flex joint. between the firewall and the rack input there is a change in angle and a flex/universal joint is there. I had a joint that allowed a few degrees of slop and when it did catch, it was very hard to turn. I repalced this joint and it was fine.

It's pretty quick to check, have a friend move the steering wheel slowly and keep an eye on the joint.

But upgrade if you can, everyone seems to love the lower ratio

If you are going to replace the flex disc (you should if swapping racks), just delete the stupid thing and bolt the flanges together with spacers. No slop.

And -- there's controversy about how good it is to delete PS on a PS rack using a plate like that, better to get a real manual rack if you want manual steering.

That said -- why would you? The racks you mentioned are great PS racks, e46 swaps are common as well (I <3 mine)

Good rack and guibo delete, you'll get a much better steering feel.

that plate is not good? Wich car I can find a manual steering?

I also have an e36 rack running power steering with the guibo deleted. Love the setup...now I just need to swap out my bad ps pump so it stops screaming every time I hit full lock

I run a z3 rack. I tried it without powersteering and found it to feel unsafe at higher speeds. Didn't like it at all. I also run 235's on the front and think the larger tires/grip had a big effect on how the car felt, but still. I think it's prob personal preference.

I have heard the arguments about wether or not it actually makes a difference. Some say it does and some say it doesn't. For the money though I figured I would give it a try and I needed something to cap of the holes anyways. I have nothing to compare it to so I will probably never know if it is better or not.

Definitely a proper manual rack is the way to go, however you will still be left with a high ratio rack. A lower ratio is very nice.

The best thing to do (although I have no idea what it costs) is to get a proper manual rack that is modified with lower ratio internals. I found someone who does this when I was doing mine but I can't remember who...

I actually never reinstalled my PS. When I first did the swap I had an issue with my steering and I thought the PS delete may have caused it. I was going to reinstall my PS to see if it fixed it but it was something else so I didn't.

I wouldn't recommend that you delete PS for a better feeling. The better road feel you may have without PS is negated when you have to park or maneuver at very low speed. Especially if you have a low ratio rack. And if you use your car as a daily driver then you are more likely to be parking then needing better road feel.

I would do it only for simplicity or if your PS system needs a lot of work and this is cheaper.

Holy sh!t our cars are twins! Except the wheels...

Do you mean unsafe at high speeds on the highway, or high speeds through turns? Like on a track or winding roads for example?

Twins?!! I have different wheels now.


I found that taking a high speed corner(off-ramp) was really scary. Felt like the steering wheel was going to rip right out oft hands. Sure, lots of road feel!! But not what I would consider a good thing. Maybe a stock e30 with 185 tires on bottle caps might feel better, I still find powersteering is much better feel on a e30 then not.

I won't claim to know much about the PS delete, I looked into it briefly and decided against it and I remember there being heated debate.

I would say to try a normal PS rack that works, then go delete if you really want to after that.

You asked about the flex disc -- it dampens forces between the wheel side of your column and the rack side. Leads to a small amount if dead space when initiating changes-- a lot of cars don't have them and many guys delete it and just use bolts (or an e36rack adapter kit that has perfectly sized spacers) and bolt the two sides hard together so there's no play

On the picture below, flex disc on the right and on the left they've used bolts/spacers to modify another part of the knuckle. You can use the same method to remove the flex disc.

That's interesting. It probably has to do with your wide wheels.

I've never had an issue with that but I'm just on 7" wide wheels.

Maybe?? Regardless, I don't think it's a performance upgrade in anyway. Especially on a street car.
Your car almost looks exactly like how mine looked when I first got it. But your obviously lowered..clean, looks good!
