E39 540i - A few repair questions

Hey Everyone,

I'm from the Toronto area and bought a 2002 540i/6 and have a few questions for you.

1. I have a very slight startup rattle and idle knocking/ticking after the car has warmed up. A few other forums have said that this is caused by the Vanos seals going bad and to replace them with the Beisan seals. Has anyone had success with this in eliminating the idle tick? or do i have to replace the entire vanos sprocket?

2. Do you know of a reputable indy in the GTA to tackle replacing the guides and vanos seals?

3. Do you know of a place in the GTA where I can get my valve covers stripped and powder coated?

4. I tried the mobil 0-40 and the start up rattle got worse (this is after i replaced the chain tensioner) so i went to castrol 5-40, and it is significantly less. is there another brand/viscocity that you guys recommend?

5. I am somewhat mechanically inclined, think i could tackle the guides and vanos seals on my own? i have another car i can use. I am just worried about the timing the chains/camshafts, i have never done that before.

Appreciate your help.

Unless you have yhe the special tools needed, its not something you can do. A lot of general mechanics wont do it, or try and fail!!! Bring iy to a reputable shop who is very familiar with this motor! If the car has more than 170-180k, I suggest to do it ASAP, as it can blow up at any point, and the damage can be extensive!

I have the same rattle and slight ticking, but I thought that the VANOS seals were a problem on the I6s, not V8s.
