ok so i pulled the starter and yes it was a jammed solenoid. i also cleaned up all the contacts just for good measure! but once i got it all back together and went to start it, it just cranked n cranked and wouldn't turn over. i smelled gas when i opened up the intake so the pump is fine, maybe i fowled the plugs? (it got dark by then so i had to pack it up) im going to pull some plugs after work, maybe check to see if i forgot to plug something back in. also there are @ plugs that look the same that come off the tranny but one is white n one black, i think i mixed them up. is there any way to know which is for what?

The early model E30s running motronic 1.0 had the crank position sensors in the bell housing. If you mixed those wires up you won't be getting a crank signal.
