A coupé or coupe (from the French verb couper, to cut) is a closed car body style (permanently attached fixed roof), the precise definition of which varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and over time. Classic coupés are hardtopped sports cars or sporty variants of sedan (saloon) body styles, with doors commonly reduced from four to two, and a close-coupled interior (i.e., the rear seat placed further forward than in a standard sedan) offering either two seats or 2+2 seating (space for two passengers in the front and two occasional passengers or children in the rear). The coupé could be a classic coupé or four-door coupé. This definition was accepted by German manufacturers, the German press and German automotive environments, after Daimler introduced in 2005 the first four-door coupé, the Mercedes-Benz CLS. In their opinion, the four-door coupé should still be classified under the coupé body style and not that of a sedan. Accordingly, vehicles that fit the previous definition of a coupé are often termed as classic coupés. However, in the public opinion four-dour coupés are still often not accepted as coupés but rather typically as luxury-sport sedans with classic coupé-like proportions. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) provides very specific definitions regarding coupés. By their definition some two-door classic coupé cars are not actually classified as coupés but fall under the two-door sedan category. Before the days of motorized vehicles, the word referred to the front or after compartment of a Continental stagecoach. First coupé cars were required to have only one side window per side, but this consideration has not been used for many years. However, the definition of coupé is changing over time, it is not fair to expand it also for other variations of coupé (without four-door version), because they are not or not yet accepted enough by other manufacters, press and automotive environments.
