You'll only know if you can log the air temperature while boosting, FYI. Keep that in mind when considering your ECU options. (MEGASQUIRT.)

Maybe save up and find one used? You can usually find one used for a good price.. MS1 for around $250 and MS2 for $400.. Check on E30tech dot com.

I dont know anything about megasquirt soo ill investigate a bit, im guessing the secobd one is better cuz of the increase of price.

Megasquirt 2 is a better board for sure, gives you finer control and still has ongoing development, but the older one will do everything you need.
Buy a solder iron and build this:

Lots of people with less ambition and skills that you have done it, I know you'd have no problem.
Ms3 is the newest and isn't needed for older motors.

The listing is for m20 m30 but loads of people have adapted for the m50. Contact Matt Kramer on it, he'll be able to help you out. Also, e30tech has the most active community on bmw ms setups; i learned everything from there. Kramer is a member there too.
