E39: Side mirror module?

I had a 2002 530i and when I put the car in reverse the passenger mirror used to tilt down. I found the feature helpful and cool! Anyway, that car is long gone and now I have a 2002 525i and the mirror doesn't do that! I took the car to the mechanic and he scanned it and said it is not a matter of the option being turned off but the scanner can't see the module at all!

So I am guessing this was an option the original buyer had skipped. Does anybody know how I can retrofit this option? What module should I look for? Where does it get installed?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Have you tried sliding the mirror adjusting switch to the passenger side. This should enable the auto-tilt in reverse.

I have tried that but no luck

Yes, that was my first try at "fixing" it but it did nothing.

not to the passenger but to the driver
mine has the same feature. if i pull in reverse it will tilt the passenger mirror down if the mirror selector is on the driver side. if you leave the selector on the passenger side it will deactivate the feature the mirror will remain normal

As far as I know yes. The side mirrors look OEM in quality and features (they are heated and I can power control them).

Where is this side mirror module supposed to be? How do I access it?

Does your car have memory seats? This is usually tied to auto mirrors. Power mirrors =/= auto mirrors.

Do you know what he was using for a scanner? NCS Expert should see the FTM and BTM (Fahrer Tür Mirror = Driver's door mirror, Beifahrer Tür Mirror = passenger door mirror) modules. The correct options need to be selected in these modules, as well as the GM5.

I don't know what scanner he used. All I remember is that he said something like "I don't even see the module option. It can't read the module."

So I am assuming there is some communication problem? Something is broken (module?), burned (fused?) or cut (wire?)

Any ideas?

Could it be the mirror?

If he didn't see the module, I'd expect it to be software before I'd suspect hardware, especially if your memory seat settings will move the mirrors to different positions correctly.

If your VO is missing SA code $430, you'd be missing the following options in NCS, which all need to be set correctly. There are settings in both the GM3 as well as the BTM.

MEMORY_SP_ABKLAPPEN_GM to aktiv
SPIEGEL_BORDSTEIN_AUTOM to aktiv
AUT_SPIEGELVERSTELLUNG to aktiv

Also, as a sanity check, do your reverse lights come on, and the cluster shows "R" when you're in reverse?

This might shed light on the problem...

For the memory settings I have to press the M1, M2, or M3 button and hold it until the seat/steering/driver mirror are adjusted. In my previous E39 I didn't have to press and hold: All I had to do is press and let go and the adjustments carried on. I find how I have to press and hold kind of weird in my current E39.

Tomorrow I am going to test to see if the passenger mirror actually adjusts with the memory settings.

The passenger mirror does not adjust with the memory settings. Everything else readjusts except the passenger mirror. It only moves via the mirror buttons. What does this mean?
