New e30 in Ottawa :)

Picked this up on the weekend. Needs some work but pretty happy considering what I paid... First thing to do is fluids, brakes and fix the rough up and down idle among other things :/

1990 325i with 295k km. Original paint with rust starting on bottom doors, rockers and fenders... will need to get that looked at eventually.

Hey welcome to MaxBimmer! Your car looks pretty cool from what I can see. You should come out and meet us all! M&M's is a ok place to start indoctrination, as an E30 driver.

Are you daily driving it? Summer only?

This will be a daily... my other daily is on its last legs (98 V70R).
The summer car is a grey import 93 Golf Wagon with a TT 3.2... though that's an endless project as well, so in the meantime this will get me around.

I'll have to check out the meet one day and look at the proper e30's!

LOL far from proper, but it's fun to complain about the myriad of weird noises and smells that seem to emanate from our cars.

mainly suspension. you'll have eliminated 80% of the noises, oh, and tires and one last...valve adjustment. :-)

Looks pretty good.

You'll most likely discover that the original seam sealer on the inside seam around the doors are separating and allowing moisture in, this will start to rust the door bottoms.

Peel all the loose seam off - at this point it just holds dirt and moisture. You'll need to just clean off the loose stuff, get yourself a POR starter kit... they sell white POR but not sure if they have white for the starter kits; follow instructions. After that apply a new bead of seam sealer. Then paint to match door.

If you catch it sooner rather than later it's not that bad of a fix.

For sure the rust will need to be tackled. Not sure what the best way to go about it is... Either get the rockers fixed by a shop and try to mend the door bottoms myself or get used door skins and colour match them. Bottoms of the fenders are not worth repairing, even though the rest of the fenders are nice. Paint on the car is in really good shape. Just needs a good buff.

For now though I think the maintenance issues trump the cosmetic. Normally I'd see Raph from Turboready, but he's never around anymore.
I hear Duss are way too $$, so I'll get a manual and do the basics myself.

Rough idle is the first thing to look at... then copper plugs/cap and rotor.
Engine oil, trans oil and diff oil along with brake fluid.

This will likely never be a mint car, but I'd like to spruce it up a bit. The "you need an e30" thread from the Car Lounge got me salivating.

I may be able to grab a set of French smiley ellipsoids, so fingers crossed

Welcome aboard. If you're in Kanata, check out Autovation to get work done. They specialize in BMWs.

Also, Canadian Tire on Carling is the ONLY place that works on my cars. Talk to Ralph (service manager) or Tony, and tell them Shawn sent you.

Just to update... I'll be ordering brakes and other parts online and start hacking away at the small issues. Might get french fogs and an Is lip too...

I've never done a timing belt before... bad idea to learn on this thing?

Also got a quote for kicks to see how much it would be to fix the rust on the bottoms of the doors, fenders and rockers... I told the guy to stop once he got to $8000.... yeaaaahhh for now that's a no-go :/

I do want to buff the car this weekend, though. That should divert attention from the rust Anyone know if you can rent a good buffer in Ottawa? If not I might just pick up an ok orbital and see what can be done with it.

If the car is just a beater for you, instead of fixing the rust, replace the doors with something that's already rust free and grab some rockers from fixmyrust.com/Great Lakes Trading post. Bolt on the rust free doors and 3m adhesive on the new rockers, a can of Tremclad or if you're feeling fancy, Duplicolour and you're done.

I bet that could be done for a bit better than $500.

Well this is a bit more than a beater for me. Fair enough about the fenders and doors but the rocker suggestion is way too ghetto. I think I'll try to por that
