Shakes and noise from steering

Shot in the dark here but I thought I'd give it a shot.

The E30 has been sitting for a while. Other than trips from my spare parking spot to my garage, it has essentially been in the same spot since November.

This week though, it started acting up.

When I turn the wheel at low speeds (dry steering for example), the steering wheels shakes and shudders and there's a noise. I don't know if that's the pump or the rack but it's a noise nonetheless.

If I remove the input on the steering (let go of the wheel), the noise and vibration goes away.

The reservoir has fluid in it (although it is low). Could something have seized? Are these normal symptoms?

The car is going to the shop today for other issues but I figured I'd ask here before I spend more $$ chasing a red herring.

If the car is making noise and steering wheel vibbrates only during turning or at the end of the turning range, then you should check the belt tension for the power steering pump. It might be pump itself, but belt and fluid level have to be checked first.

Step 1. Fill up the fluid. Low fluid will cause noise, notchiness and harder steering, not all at the same time. Its a quick job and it will feel mucho niceroni

Thanks. There is fluid in the reservoir it's just a little low. I would expect noises if it were bone dry.

Like you said though, hopefully the easy fix does it

not so, those symptoms can occur when the resevoir is 2 ounces low. Fill it to 1/2 inch below the lip and you'll be fine.
