Guys, it's just a machine. I honestly can't believe how much mechanics charge to work on these cars, I find the E39 to be a really easy car to work on. In my experience, the correct way is to start small, buy yourself a shop manual, read and ask questions on forums. Even if you don't go any further than that it will help you to understand what's going on, it's far less likely a mechanic can take advantage of you then.
EDIT: Always make sure cooling system stuff is addressed ASAP, addresss oil leaks when you're ready, no big deal. Maybe I'm slow today,... what are UTC Gaskets?
