e46 studders at highspeed

Hey everyone, I've looked everywhere and cannot find the solution...

the last 2 weeks my car runs smoothly up until 95km/h - 115km/h and then the RPM will lag and studders around 2000, having a really hard time to get up to speed. I cannot describe it but the gas consumption meter goes up to 20L/100 but the tachometer struggles to go pass 2000... After about 10-15secs of lagging, it revs up normally.

The best i can describe it is, its like shifting gears from 1-2-3-5, it misses 4th gear... but this is an automatic... The problem goes away if its in steptronic. (RPM revs up normally no lugging along at that speed)

I originally thought spark plugs will fix the problem but it didnt... sooo any suggestions?

2000 328i, 159000km, always synthetic and 91Octane gas. No mods to engine.

Hey tthai4, I was wondering if you have determined the cause of this issue yet? I have a 1999 e46 328i auto and am having the same sort of issue. I have been searching all over the Internet and found that the problem could possibly be the injectors, coil packs, vanos, or the transmission. I have not found a clear answer though and was wondering if you have found any solutions to this problem. Thanks.

If it only does it in auto mode, then there's probably something wrong with the tranny computer. If it was the shift solenoids inside the transmission then it would do the same no matter what mode you were in.

If you said you have absolutely no problems in step mode then its the software. Go get your EGS updated to the latest version.

But at 160k kms you MUST replace the following things to make sure your car is up to date:
Vanos seals
both intake boots
all coilpacks
precat O2 sensors
clean your maf with CRC maf cleaner

ALl those mentioned above can contribute to your shuddering, but if the car has absolutely no problems in step mode then its the EGS software .
