It is a lot less common than it used to be as the average deductible ($500) is now more then the average replacement windshield ($400).
A few insurance companies will pay for a windshield repair just as a kindly gesture; they used to do it to avoid having to pay to replace the whole windshield but they are not having to do that as often unless it is an extremely expensive replacement (refer back to average deductible comment).
Bmw quoted me $1200 to replace the rain sensing windshield. Also said they cannot file the claim in house, and that some ppl have had trouble getting it covered after paying the dealer and submitting a claim themselves. My broker said(before I called bmw) that I should fix it and they will pay me back minus the $300 deductible.
So I started calling around, found a company that will cover $175 and ill only have to pay $125, Im likely going that route.
