Difference between M52B28 motors?

Hi guys, I'm looking to purchase a motor of a member here and he's got an M52B28 from an E36 328. I'm going to be swapping it into my E39 528 and was wondering if there are any differences I should be aware of. What's parts will I need from my old motor in order to get the donar one to swap in?

All I've come up with so far is the mounts and the oil pan are needed from the 528 block in order to get the 328 to fit?

Weren't all e39 528s m52TU engines (ie, dual vanos)? If so, I don't think you can swap in an e36 M52, which is a single vanos iron block.

Btw, there is no m54b28 ... it's m52TU and m54b30 (or 25)

Edit ... guess not. Had no idea the e39 went that far back.

Put it this way, there are 2 types of 528's; 96-98 (single vanos) identical to any E36 328, and 99-00 dual vanos, identical to any 328 E46. Same motor as far as block/head/intake, other then that almost everything is different from 3 to 5, and it ALL has to be swaped out!

I don't think you can swap in an e36 M52, which is a single vanos iron block.

Ok guys BOTH cars are 1997's.

What accesories DON'T need to be switched over? Is changing the oil sumps a must? I'm curious now to!

Well, if the block and head are the same, it shouldn't be a problem because I'll have the complete engine from the 5 series to strip the accessories and whatnot from.

So to save myself of having to get an engine hoist and all that, I'm deciding to just replace the head... Anyone shed any light as to how to set the timing or keep everything in place from moving around while the head is removed?

Well, in his defense, he did warn me that the head had small hairline cracks in it after he resurfaced and inspected it. I was trying to save a few bucks from having to replace the head at the time. I don't think the issue has anything to do with my friend, but more so fault on my end.
