OEM or dynavin are the big ones, other than that you can go DIN with a flip screen or double DIN if you relocate your AC panel

I have heard good things about the new android dynavin units, mine is older and just ok

+1 - looking to get this done by end of summer also, the original owner installed a single din and I'm looking to upgrade to the nav system.

- OEM navi is terrible and outdated.
- Dynavin is close to $1000, its great but its expensive and harder to get (Ebay, online retailers, etc.)

Your best bet is to get a Garmin windshield mountable GPS. It is cheap (check tigerdirect.ca), very easy to use, looks good, and you can update it once it gets old. Anything built-in will have a bad viewing angle. I had the opportunity to get a Dynavin as a gift, but I couldn't bear to see the other person spending so much on it. IMO it's just not worth it..

If you go OEM you'll have to wire it up properly or get the conversion cable for it and tear out the car to wire it through....(yep, been there, done that). Then you'll need to trim pieces for the trunk if you want a total OEM look. If I had to do it again, I would have saved my $$ and time and bought a stick on nav unit.

Navi is a waste and not worth the headaches in 2012...
Unless you trying to be hardcore e46. Its an UGLY SCREEN...

Either buy a windshield mounted GPS or do some fancy fancy on your front console, which has WAY MORE features than what BMW provides. (and CHEAPER!)

It's true, my dynavin cost wayyy too much $$$ for what you get out of it. It doesn't even improve sound quality as much as a higher end single DIN deck which would be around 1/3 the price

A standalone gps may be best...

For the record I do get a lot of people complimenting on the dynavin....shhhhh

I wrote recently about this in a thread in the audio/interior classifieds section. I have the Dynavin and though I do love how OEM it looks. However in terms of options and features, it is seriously lacking compared to most aftermarket decks from Pioneer/Alpine. The Dynavin ipod interface is terrible which is starting to get on my nerves. To add to it, the Dynavin is more expensive than those aftermarket decks as well.

That being said I knew all this and still bought the Dynavin. Part of me regrets it, then again I would do it again. I just cant stand how tacky most aftermarket decks look. Also from a Nav perspective, I do think the Dynavin has potential as you can load different nav softwares that are compatible with windows CE.

Just thought I'd add, if you're tying to improve sound..

This is my Kenwood KIV-700 (same thing as the BT900 minus the bluetooth):

It brought my OEM non-hk speakers to life using the built in preamp. The sound was so improved in fact, that I sold my 4-channel Alpine amp. So many options in this little thing.. For example, I can the distance that each speaker sits from me in inches, has built-in crossovers, speaker size select, too many to list. Also color matches my interior lighting perfectly and plays video. This is an iPod deck BTW, so no CD playing capabilities whatsoever.

For GPS, its hard to beat Google Navi on my Android phone + a windshield mount.
