528i cylinder head

I've had a friend who owns a shop try and save my 528i which had overheating issues that was caused by the cylinder head. Now I'm out looking for another one with any cracks and whatnot and plan on doing this myself now that I have a garage to work on it.

I've done engine swaps before (not BMW), and was wondering if I would be better off swapping a M52B28 in from a 328 or another 528i rather than replacing the head and sort out the timing and vanos, etc etc. Someone that has done both these jobs care to shed some light?
