Question K&N Install (Car running lean)

Hey Guys

So I have an Injen intake system and decided to replace the dirty filter with a k&n cone. After install car was running great but a few days of driving it led to my SES light to come on. Both Banks were running lean. The original filter measurements are 3.5 Flange inside diameter 5.5 base, 6.875 heght and 4.5 top. The K&N filter measurement is 3.5---8---8---6.625. So clearly much bigger filter.

My question is. Is it possible that the filter is too big and my mass air flow sensor cannot keep up with reading the amount of air that is being taken in thus running the car lean.

I know there is talk about the oil getting onto the mass air flow sensor, so i have cleaned it and still the codes come up. I did put the old filter back on and no codes came up so that cancelled out any vacuum leak after the MAF.

Thanks
Jasper

Your filter can be bigger than your whole car and it won't make a difference. Your engine will suck in as much air as it needs and your maf has no problem keeping up. Usually running lean is a sign of a bad MAF. Try cleaning it again? Maybe the MAF has permanent damage, but hopefully not.

Good luck!

I've been running with stock box for a few months and the MAF is fine. It only acts up when the K&N is in. I just put the injen intake back on and i'm going to see if i get a light on with the injen filter. I never did before only when i installed the k&n using the injen pipe.

Interesting. Is the k&n and oiled filter?

I installed a dinan intake which modifies the factory box and use's a k&n drop in filter which is oiled and i have never had a problem. Touch wood!

Get your injectors clean. Your injen intake is drawing more air (combined with filter) and the injectors aren't adding enough fuel.

It's not the filter. Every Tom Dick and Harry adds K&N filters without any problems. The exisiting software should be able to adjust for the air flow unless there is a problem with the oxygen sensors or the MAF itself.
I am assuming that it is the only change you have made to this car.
I would be curious what the A/F ratios are throughout the range with the stock system in place...
Sounds like you need access to a broad band oxygen sensor set up and to see what is actually going on...

Other then the Injen intake I have a muffler delete but that shouldn't affect air into the system.

What MAF is in the car? Perhaps a fellow member would be good enough to swap one out to see if the error persists.
Please check all connections to ensure there is no vacuum leaks.

I've re-installed the injen intake and put back the amsoil filter and haven't had any issues. My MAF is running fine. i've also cleaned it a couple of times seeing if the oil from the filter may have caused the codes. I know I dont have any vacuum leaks or they would still be throwing codes. I might try and buy a smaller k&n filter then the one i had before and see if it throws codes.
