Where do you guys get your gear?
mostly helmets, but shoes, gloves, suits etc
Where do you go? I've look online for shops in the GTA and they either had really shitty sites to navigate or they had helmets $500 and up. I'm lookin for something between $200-$300.
I can get one online but kinda risky with sizing.

Its a ways away from you, but Perry Performance in Laval is my go-to shop. Carl is a great guy, and knows his stuff bigtime.

Dave,
You've been hanging around E30 people for too long, if you think you can get a half decent helmet for $300.
CSC in Newmarket sells Bell helmets, so does Peter Hanson (you can PM me for his contact info).
Look on CASC forums for used suits, gloves, shoes.

I got my Shark S900 helmet at a motorcycle shop in Streetsville just before it went outta business. Fantastic deal.. but you can also buy them at many sites online.

ya but that only has a Snell 2010M rating (bike helmet) which isn't worth spending that kinda money on to protect your melon in a car on the track

Yep, I bought an BNIB AR-10 II last year on ebay for $300. It's a nice helmet. I went to a bike shop and tried on HJC bike helmets to test out the sizing of their helmets. The helmet ended up fitting slightly different than the bike helmets did, but overall it was still a good fit.

I seriously doubt if other than the nomex interior the helmet is actually any different. This would entail engineering two different helmets, and having two different assembly lines, when all that is necessary is to change the material that the liner is made of, and have that helmet approved.
Considering that I do not have fire suppression and don't wear a nomex suit paying extra money for a fire proof helmet just seems like a waste to me.

Wrong, SA is more then just fire rating, it's tested for multiple
Impact from being in the car.

I'm aware of that as well, still doesn't change my assumption that it is the same helmet with a different lining. The motorcycle market is much larger than the automotive racing market, the economics don't make sense to engineer and manufacture a different helmet.

Excuse my ignorance to the topic, but what is the major difference between a motorcycle helmet and a car performance driving/race helmet? Could you not use a motorcycle helmet for performance driving? Especially the high end ones?

until you start to go racing yes. Most clubs accept M or SA rated helmets for lapping days/autocross

The difference, as it was explained to me, is that an M helmet isn't as strong - it's designed to shatter on impact because it's the only thing between your head and whatever you're crashing into. A car is different - your head doesn't hit obstacles, the car does. So in a car, the helmet needs to be able to sustain multiple smaller impacts, such as smacking your head around on the inside as the car rolls. If you've ever held both, you can feel it. An SA helmet feels like it's built out of steel while the M is cardboard, relatively.
So while an M is better than no helmet, it's not an acceptable substitute for SA.
