*** BMW E34 540i transmission broke ***
Hey guys,
Ive got a 1995 BMW 540i. A couple days ago my car slid into a curb. Tried driving it out and lost my reverse gear (its automatic BTW).
Transmission was shifting rough driving home and like i said, I lost reverse. I brought it to the shop the next day and the transmission fluid smelt burnt, it was black, and it was low on fluid.
Now im stuck in a position where i dont know if i should buy a used transmission or rebuild mine. Any opinions and locations or places I should go to, to get my car back on the road asap.
Thanks

I was thinking about a 6-speed conversion but i think it'd be a bigger headache than what i can handle. LoL
InspClave, i"ll give them a call.
Anyone else with any recommendations?

Add more fluid.
Won't harm anything since it is "broke" and low.
Did you spin the wheels big time to get out of the ditch?
I think you have the 5HP30 trans, which can lose reverse for a few reasons. Hope adding fluid, gives you the reverse comes back.
Else it will be valve body issues and clutch plates

The rebuild would be around $2500 - $3000, depending on where you go.

Could be sensors on the tranny or your abs module, make sure to check those before buying another tranny

Well the tranny was shifting funny, especially downshifting, and there was no fluid as it was down 2L so im guessing its the transmission.

It all depends who does the rebuilding. Just like any major job, it can be done the right way, or the cheap way! Most reputable places will fully take it appart, clean and replace all wear parts, rebuild and balance torque convertor, replace any other broken damaged parts if any. This is what we used to do at Mr Transmission when i worked there 15 years ago...

Eurostyle, you got any recommendations for transmission shops? Any comments about Mister Transmission?
