Markham Family racks up $25K in parking fines in their driveway !?

Family racks up $25K in parking fines in their driveway

Jeffrey Burke and Pamela Defino what the 600 parking tickets they've got are for and they'll tell you they got 'em parking in their own driveway.

The city of Markham, Ontario tells it a little different. "Parking in their own driveway" is actually blocking the sidewalk, parking overnight on the street (which isn't allowed there) or angling their cars so they jut out into the road, reports the Toronto Star.

Their two cars are a tight fit for their small one-car garage, which is filled with construction equipment for Burke's work, anyway.

So Burke parks his GMC Sierra in the part of the driveway between the garage and the sidewalk, and his wife parks her BMW SUV on the piece of driveway between the sidewalkand road.

At worst, the BMW's bumper might stick out into the street, he admits. "The tires are still on the driveway," though.

Over a number of years they've racked up 600 parking tickets for eight cars and nine licence plate numbers; nothing they've tried has been able to stop the tickets from coming in, even buying a smaller car.

Burke estimates he's paid about $23,000 in fines so far, but Markham's by-laws manager, Bill Wiles, says they've still another $12,000 due to the city.

ďAbout 40 percent are because of the cost that incurred when they didnít pay, or dispute[d it] and were convicted in absentia,Ē Wiles told the Star.

Those added costs can bump a typical $40 ticket to more than $55 dollars.

Wiles says the tickets have, quite simply, been issued in response to neighbours' complaints; several tickets were for a pickup truck sticking out into the street.

One neighbour - apparently not one of the complainers - says that was the Sierra, which for a few years was parked between the sidewalk and road, instead of the BMW.

She couldn't understand why they kept parking like that if they kept getting tickets, she said.

and who zoned & ok'd its construction that way?

What are you on about now? It's illegal to block the sidewalk, park on the boulevard, or poke into the street. It sounds like they had a good party mix of all 3 going, daily.

Their own fault for buying a home that couldn't accommodate their needs - no sympathy here...

If they can afford $25K in fines, they could have afforded to move too...

Yea I don't understand why people buy single driveway homes and expect to own 3-4 cars.

The guy next to me parks 4 vehicals on there drive way, and have never had a ticket.

They park two side by side in front of garage, one at the rear bumper of those, going parrallel with the sidewalk. Than another between sidewalk and road.

Im sure theres more to the story than told, he probably went on a rampage on every of parking enforcment he catches, so they do it just because they can.

LOL...she gets her infant daughter so she can be in the photo hoping for public sympathy yet she fails to park your Bimmer in the driveway whilst the picture is taken which would show the problem she's faced with!!! She played it very well.

What a load of BS...

1 - there are far more injustices in this world than to report on this. is this is what 'news' is classified as today?
2 - how they would be willing to pay 25k in fines is beyond me. that's after tax dollars too! i'd find a better use for 25k.
3 - i don't know if i'd take this up with the press - nothing be proud of. it's like someone asking you - have you stopped beating your mom? whatever the answer is - you still look dumb.
4 - what did they get out of this aside from being ridiculed by most and for the people that support them not like people are chipping in to cover the rest of the fines.

this is a no win situation for them. so i'm in the camp of ridiculing them.

for $23,000K they could have looked at a parking rotating system..
cant fathom this couple at all, willing to pay that much fine.

I would have use a storage facility for the construction equipments
and use the garage for what its been built for...
