FS: E46 M3 6 speed transmission / OEM Clutch & Flywheel
I'm selling my E46 M3 6 speed transmission with OEM clutch & flywheel.
The transmission got 92000km on it and the clutch/pressure plate/flywheel 37000km.
Everything work well.
Reason I'm selling this unit is to do a 5 speed conversion
Price: 1500$

Weight purposes. He is building a track car.

How much weight are we talking here ? I would think that would be more than made up with a high ratio diff and the 6sp ?

I already have a 4.10 diff.
Yes I'm doing the conversion to save up some weight, a normal swap save around 20lbs. However, I also need a different driveshaft to do this swap and I'm looking at a custom carbon fiber one piece DS, another 6lbs and better vibration dampening. And finally, I will get a Bimmerworld race aluminum flywheel and 5'' clutch, complete unit weight 11lbs.
In the end, I,m looking at 35lbs and a lot less rotational mass so it should rev up faster.
Even if the 5 speed are less reliable than the 6 speed unit, they cost a fraction of the price and I'm not looking to add much power to my track car, I'm just looking to shave the maximum weight possible.
Here is my track car:

And here is my new race car project:

I would like something around 2600lbs

5 spd is also more reliable in track apps than the 6 spd from anything Ive seen...

I would think with the 4:10 diff you are gonna run out of rpm with the 5sp but I guess it depends on the track.
I've actually heard the 5sp is much more reliable as well.
The driveshaft is dubious, yes it's lighter but the mass is on a very small radius. Rotational mass is a function of mass and radius.
BTW rotational mass can add another effective 1000lbs to a car, wheels being one of the worst culprits.
Nice projects.
Are you selling your 6speed with the driveshaft ?
BTW, I have some 5sp manual transmissions for sale.

Wheels are TR Mt1 18x9.5 et35 and 18x10 et25. They are not the lightest wheels but 20lbs isn,t bad. My RAC Monolites RS 110 were 17lbs and super strong.
I spend most of my time at Le Circuit Mont Tremblant, where I hit 225km/h in the backstraight so I think I won't ran out of gear.
With my actual setup, I barely use the 5 gear at LCMT so the 6 gear is useless.
Rotational mass as mention isn't just the driveshaft weight loss but also the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate assy.

The E46 M3 driveshaft will be sell separetely.
dbworld4k I will send you a pm right now

regarding the rotational mass I assumed you would put the light flywheel clutch in anyway. My point is that for 6 lbs of driveshaft it's a questionable decision as the driveshaft is only 4" in diameter. Carbon is wonderful stuff but it won't outlast steel.
Check out this software http://performancetrends.com/Inertia_Calculator.htm for exact information. I am just guessing.

With a 5spd and 4.10 gears, you could hit a theoretical VMax of ~145mph at 8000RPM with the S54.

Found 2x 5-speed tranny for 300$
One from a MZ3 and the other one from a E36 M3.
Don't need the 6-speed anymore.
