Winter beater, what to get??

Currently looking for winter beater, what to get for $1000?

I've been looking around kijiji and it looks like there are a lot of choices out there for 1000.00 for running ok condition vehicles.

looking for wagon type, sedan with minimal to no rust.

2000, ford focus
sentra
legacy
lancer

any suggestion? anything reliable and ones that can take abuse, doesnt have to be manual, in face automatic is prefered.

Toyota Corolla/Camry, Honda Civic, that's it, don't even bother with anything else, you can't find a better car for the money, anything else will require some work later on.

You won't agree with me but my recommendation is a truck/SUV. Maybe an older 4Runner. The thing with Civics etc is that while they're better than the rest, they have their own set of problems at this age and they're not easy to work on (well the non-AC, no option bubblebacks are an exception, but driving one of those will get old fast). You'll likely want to/need to change the timing belt, starter, possibly alternator, brake master - none of which are simple to do in the little engine bay stuffed to the gills. The suspension, brakes and driveline will be very tired. Then there are various electrical issues to chase (on my DA teg for instance, I had a fun time chasing intermittent rear light outage [fun if a cop spots you], which turned out to be cold solder joints on the DRL relay - common problem but exclusive to Canada so not well documented).

Not that a truck is immune to any of this but the running gear is way tougher and working on them is so much nicer due to the access.

see the problem with civic/camry/corrolla is that they are out of my budget. and if they are, usually they are a lot older model in comparison to reletively newer models of above list.

suv is out of question because of fuel economy as well as the reason that i need to take the beater to winter trackdays.

Might cost you a bit more but the reliability and the AWD with the Subaru is a solid bet.

Personally, for beaters, I like rare, or obscure, or cool cars.
I've had 99 Suby Legacy AWD 5spd, 91 Lexus ES250, LR Discovery. Currently a Turbo VOlvo.
Personally, I would pick up a cheap o, manual SUV, or some old school baller mobile. (LExus, 7 series, S class, Acura Vigor, etc)

I would never get a civic or a corolla junk.

99/00 civic . can be had for $300-1300 depending on what is needed to make it road worthy. you wont find a more reliable/better beater. period.

and lol @ suby legacy is not rare, nor is a volvo or discovery. wtf.

bigd you are so off on basically everything you said regarding those cars. very easy to work on, reliable(tough) . lol electrical issues.

I concur, very tough cars. I drove mine like my goal was to blow it up, it never did.

Anyway, here are some choices, even though I didn't need a DD for this year, I still spent time on Kijiji some time back for possible cars.
I guess if someone wants a newer car, my choices suck. LOL
