I've driven my lowered E36's for the past four winters. Once even with summer tires (I don't recommend it).
Best winter tires I have used are Nordfrost III's and Hankook ipikes 205/50/R1X. Generally you want your winter tires skinner to move through the snow easier. As long as your easy on the throttle you should have no problems. Obviously if you drive it like its a snowmobile you may have trouble getting around.

in kitchener, there is Houghton's rust control on Victoria. I've gone there a few times. They've been rustproofing cars for like 40 years

No salt in alberta. They use some spray that coats the roads/ice that makes them "grippier". Many municipalities also use sand.

I don't have rust proofing done but from what I'm seeing and reading, I should probably get it done on the E90.
I'll be driving it year round, just picked up Dunlop 3D winters last night for a steal of a price ( 2 x 225/40/18 + 2 x 255/40/18 = $700 w/ 90% tread) 1309 manufacture date (March 09).

E36 Winter Drive
I'll be driving mine in winter this year... on winter rims and tires Kumho KW19s - 205/60/15s....jealous of all the guys with alloys for winters.
My car is lowered on cracked oem springs...lol
Even has the tuck in the back....lol
Look for suspension overhaul thread soon.
Looking into rust proofing - most likely place in Scarborough - Markham and Finch.
