Lightbulb BMW Factories - literally giving it 110 percent

In these tough economic times, a lot of automakers are making cuts and adjusting production output. BMW isn't worried, though; they're working hard as usual. They're literally giving it 110 percent.

Their factories are actually running above capacity this year, reports Automotive News. (If they can run above capacity, what does "capacity" really mean?)

In the auto industry, factory output is measured against the Harbour Report standard, which defines "full capacity" as a five-day work week with two shifts working every day.

BMW is going beyond that, trying to meet high demand by upping capacity in factories in China, India, the USA and South Africa.

The extra room to go over capacity will come out of the phase-out of the current generation 1-series and 3-series.

They'll be turning out more than 1.6 million cars this year, closer to two million, but they're prepared to absorb a sudden drop in demand if one happens.

Awesome, the more day to day boring cars they sell the more money they'll have to R&D the new M3.
