QFT. Just went through this decision myself.

PS, Nice car!

Personally...unless I grabbed an M3 engine, I would not be interested, only because the work putting it in is the same as an M50. And those motors aren't that great to begin with. And since M3 motors aren't easy to get; I'd just as well do a proper build from the get go, and have factory looking car with all the pony's underneath.

I also saw a write up somewhere that can make an M42 engine beat M20 with minimal mod's that don't require rebuilding the engine. Since it is lighter to begin with; and the tech is more reliable; these mods can bring the BHP up to 170hp easily.

Hi Ceeker, I for one, would very much enjoy either "a link" or perhaps a "nice post/thread on this subject......

Meh, not interested. If the car was a clean 318is then I would consider going that route to keep it original, but we're talking about a $1K 318i 4 door here. I'm not disputing that the M42 is a fun motor because it is, but it's also really buzzy/loud and gets annoying after a while IMHO. Also, after doing my 540i/6 touring swap, I wanted to try something a little more challenging. It will be a clean, fun car when it's done, and it's not going to cost much to do the swap at all, so the $$ aspect is irrevelant. As I said before I got a good motor for free. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it will make me happy, which is all that matters, right?
