Back in the E30 game!

Hey all,

Just thought I'd post some shots of my newly acquired winter-beater. I wanted an E30 because (besides the obvious reasons) I've had a good M50 sitting on a stand in my garage for a while now and I don't want to waste it. This is my 3rd E30 (had two 318is's before) and to my surprise it's probably the tightest one I've driven. Suspension, although non-sport, feels fresh and nothing vibrates, rattles, clunks, etc. All it needs for a safety is a rear defroster switch and probably a taillight cover(PM me if you have either!). Came with IS front and rear spoilers too!

The guy I bought it from had the head rebuilt and he couldn't figure out why it was still overheating. He thought it was cracked or warped. I had a hunch. Sure enough, got it home and it was full of air. It's been pretty solid since I gave it a good bleed. Should make a fine winter driver. It's got some rust here and there, but nothing too major. I really wanted a coupe and saw some clean ones for sale, but for 3-5x the price I got this one for ($1k). Can't wait to start tinkering!

Looks like a steal for that price!

So your plan is m50 next spring then? Or for the winter?

In the spring. gonna do the bodywork and wheels/drop all at the same time. I have many of the swap parts accumulated already.

Same guy that was fighting with Scott for no reason on that other thread.... Figure it's just a grudge by now

Anyways back to the OP lol what bodywork / suspension you planning? Body looks better than most I see now to begin with :p

^Yeah it really is clean - the pics aren't hiding anything. Apart from a few small stains on the carpet, there are next to no signs of wear anywhere - especially for a 265xxxkm car. If it had sport seats I'd be in Heaven, but I'm afraid I'm gonna have a Hell of a time finding some that match the condition of these comfort seats. Even the driver's seat looks like it's never been sat in.

To answer Cormier, if you look at the pics you can see some pretty substantial bubbling on the passenger rear arch, as well as what is almost a hole in the rear valance under the pass. tail light. Those are the worst spots. There is also a loonie-sized spot on the corner right under the driver's side taillight, as well as a few spots on the rockers and on the bottoms of the doors/trunklid and obviously around the license plate lights. Underneath its clean and the battery tray is intact as far as I can tell. The fenders are not too bad either. As for suspension, I'm not too sure yet. Still looking around to see what's out there.

once i leave the e30 scene, which should be ultra soon, there is no way i will come back unless

A) E30 M3
B) 24 Valve Swapped but this time bigger than m50tu

I was thinking this too but I think with some software, M3 cams, and the right gearing, the M50tu should be entertaining enough in the E30 for a while. Plus it was a free motor and it runs like a top - when my buddy had it in his E36 we always used to talk about how it seemed like one of those "freak" motors. That car always seemed to pull harder than it should have...

With the money spent on doing a swap etc. You could have literally made a nice car out of what you had and not encounter all these seeming problems. these are simple cars with simple needs. but everyone wants to redesign the car; and I have to say, some have been successful and have done really nice work. But for the most part. many are sloppy and this ruins the appeal. Btt one spends all the money to put a swap in, you could stroke a motor, have about the same money if not a bit more and get over 200 wheel horsepower and not have to go through the pain of mod' the car to make things work.
everything else can stay the same externally with small adjustments such as mounts for eg.

Personally...unless I grabbed an M3 engine, I would not be interested, only because the work putting it in is the same as an M50. And those motors aren't that great to begin with. And since M3 motors aren't easy to get; I'd just as well do a proper build from the get go, and have factory looking car with all the pony's underneath.

I also saw a write up somewhere that can make an M42 engine beat M20 with minimal mod's that don't require rebuilding the engine. Since it is lighter to begin with; and the tech is more reliable; these mods can bring the BHP up to 170hp easily.
