opinions/remarks on engine stalling out? *scott will like this one*

so

as usual when 1 thing goes good for my e30, another bad thing happens.

THIS TIME, after getting my temp plate sticker today, suspension all up to par, engine loaded, exhaust bolted up, car ready to hit the streets...

car wouldnt turn on, then it did, and the idle was so shit till it stalled out. ???

eventually, it was holding an idle on its own and it sounded like there was stuff inside the engine that needed to be blown out.

surely enough...shit idle and BANG POP BANG. i though oh great the engine is toast and im just waiting for that piston to shoot out the side.

anyway, in an attempt to have the engine clear it self out being outside the car for over 2 months, i left it idling, and there was smoke all over the place. it looked like what i saw back in april...smoke every where.

then my dads like OMGGGGG. my catalytic converter was SCORCHING RED. car almost caught on fire!!

so, after seeing that.....it hit me. my spark plugs were covered in carbon. my engine stalls after on its own. smoke everywhere. lack of power. almost burning my e30 down. i think the exhaust pipe this entire time is THE culprit.

the catalytic must be broken which blocks up the exhaust to go anywhere but back to the engine. this probably happened back in nov. when i drove over the rock that murdered the shit out of my oil pan, guess it smoked the cat on its way out, which also explains the dent in the catalytic converter.

makes sense? anyone ever experience this?

looks like my POS is getting a new exhaust....

cat is clogged. I've seen this on a caddy once years ago. I'd just get another cat. pretty cool to look at though huh? LOL. like the brakes on an F1 car at night!

It's NOT clogged (yet) and it's not "doing it's job." A cat normally gets very hot when in use, but NOT GLOWING hot.

Something is causing raw unburned fuel to be sent down the exhaust pipe where the cat "burns" this fuel. The cat is designed to burn the tiny amount of unburned fuel that comes from a normal engine. Now, if you pour excessive hydrocarbons (fuel) in the exhaust, the cat will burn that too and since it's burning too much fuel it glows red hot. This won't last very long, this is very damaging to the cat. The catalyst can get hot enough to melt. And that won't take long! And when it melts, then you will have a blob of molten metal blocking the exhaust pipe (now it's clogged!) and the engine will stop operating. At that point, the only fix is replacement of the catalytic converter.

However, if you find and fix the problem now you can avoid that expense. You have to find why raw fuel is going through the engine. The most common reason would be a bad spark plug or bad spark plug wire. If the spark doesn't work, there is no "combustion" in that cylinder and the raw unburned fuel goes out the exhaust pipe.

This is something I read.

Try removing the exhaust from the manifold. I bet it will run fine.

Like I said before, "pics of Rob's car burning down"! Nah, but seriously, I don't know how you keep your sanity with that car. Kudo's to you, Rob, for your patience and perseverance. A true example of "worst case scenario". I feel for you man!

Do you have any codes? Before you spend money on a new exhaust, you should ensure it's the cause. I bet you have a busted crank or cam sensor.

The online explanations are pretty unambiguous. Get it on video if you still have trouble.

Damn... you didn't buy it from me did you? I remember I sold you the boot but I can't remember if I sold you the MAF too. That thing was tip top, came from a low mile car... sorry if that's the case
