There is a dude in Bowmanville with a red E30 who has done this. Stephen is his name I believe, but he used a 2jz. It fit in there nicely and left a lot of room actually.
This swap would make for a killer setup.
Why a 1jz and not a 2?

It actually is a Nissan SR20, not a Toyota motor.

You're likely running into the same brake booster problem that 24v swap guys do. There are at least a dozen proven, documented ways around that. Google E30 brake booster swap and see what you come up with.

When I was researching stuffing an SR20 into my e30, I came across a guy who was running the Suzuki Grand Vitara brake booster. Since the 1j and the SR20 are roughly the same dimension wise, maybe that's an option worth looking into.
Alternately, get on Google and check out K-Conversions. They do a lot of motorbike stuff, but they also have kits available to stuff a SR20 and 1J into the e30. Maybe they can provide you some information.
