steering rack removal

how the F do you get it off the splines of the column?

i took off the 13mm screws, and it isn't budging!!


any tips?

or since i know your lazy i copied a DIY guide from e30tech, with pretty pictures and all.

Step 1: Jack up the vehicle and set it on jack stands

Step 2: Remove both front wheels from the car

Step 3: Turn your steering wheel all the way to each side and remove the tie rod ends from the strut

[i]NOTE: Use a small jack to raise the strut up on the control arm ball joint and then use a block of wood and a hammer to knock the tie rock end down and out of the strut.

Step 4: Remove the old tie rod boots using a flat head screw driver to pry the boot clamps loose

NOTE: This is what a rack will look like when it finally takes a shit



Step 5: Bend the tie rod locking plates off of the inner tie rod



Step 6: Remove the inner tie rods from the steering rack using the vice grips.


Step 7: Drain the power steering fluid from the PS reservoir.

Step 8: Disconnect all power steering hoses from the PS pump and the steering rack.

x2 19mm Banjo Bolts & x2 22mm Banjo Bolts


NOTE: KEEP ALL BANJO BOLTS REMOVED FROM THE STEERING RACK AND THE PS PUMP!




Step 9: Remove the PS Reservoir by loosening the 13mm bolt shown below. Then remove the low pressure lines and save the hose ends for the new low pressure hoses.

Removing the PS Res. with the bracket makes it easier to remove and loosen the 10mm bolt that clamps it in place



Step 10: Loosen the 13mm bolts that hold the steering knuckle in place.





Step 11: Unbolt steering rack from the subframe by looseing the 15mm bolts holding it in place.



Step 12: Carefully bend back the lower tabs on the subframe that support the bottom part of the steering rack.



Step 13: Drop the old steering rack from the steering knuckle.



Step 14: Remove the steering knuckle from the steering column spline.

NOTE: Using a flat head screw driver helps to open the knuckle at the spline to make it drop. See Picture Below.

How the F*** did you do manage an engine swap?

Once you pull the tie rod ends, the two chassis bolts, and the hoses, all you have to do is undo the small (13mm) bolt and remove it completely... then jam a flat head screwdriver into the grove to spread the aluminum away from the splines. Then it's usually pretty easy to bang it off from the top side of the engine compartment with a hammer and a length of 2x4 or whatever you have kicking around. So exactly like the pictures.

Mine was stuck on, someone decided to put some kind of glue on the splines. it might take a few hours of banging to get it off if someone had the same idea for yours.

I changed my rack while I did my swap and even with an empty engine bay it was a massive pain in the ass to remove the rack from the knuckle . I would absolutely hate to do that again with a motor in. Mini sledge + wood + lots of sweat and mine came off.

hey tdot. clearly you missed the part where I was asking for any tips on how to get the knuckle off the spline. i did an engine swap, i think i have the brains to try the obvious and put a screw driver into an opening to pry open. as you can tell, from some of the replys i am not the only one that had trouble. but how rude of me, I should say thanks man. i'm so lazy suckers like you do work for me. so why not enjoy the work being done for you? now thats the life.


scott, good Q. i had no faith in myself but said **** it, winged it and it was a success....then shit happens of course :p Thing is i'm not stupid. i took the bolt off the knuckle part and rammed my biggest flat head, twisted with all my might, and got nothing out of it.

might try a li'l lube...lol.crown or wd? or even maybe some heat; just be careful of fuel lines..lol. they are mighty close by..

Well in order for it to come out you need to have everything loose/off and unmount the rack, I didn't think you were smart enough to figure that out since you are asking this type of question. It also serves to show you what needs to be removed encase you missed something else.

I've done the rack on my e30, I know how easy it was. Use your brains that you say you have and you should be able to figure it out if you know it all already, instead of creating threads like this.

One of the first things that I had to do to my car was swap the steering knuckle because it was shot. You don’t need to do anything to the steering rack to get the knuckle off. The spline on the steering column is long enough that you can slide the knuckle upwards and off the rack and then down and off the column. I soaked mine with PB blaster and waited a couple house, got lucky that it wasn’t seized on too badly. Sticking a screw driver in the slot and twisting won’t really do much, you need to hammer it in there to separate it enough. To get the knuckle off use a small pry bar on the knuckle and against the body of the car for leverage and hammer on it, impact is what’s going to break loose stuff that’s seized together.

edit: Also when you put it back together make sure the splines on both parts are clean otherwise you'll have lots of fun getting it together.

Heat that son of a biatch up with fire... unless you plan on keeping the rack... fire tends to melt that rubber cap below the splines.

Try turning the rack to full lock, and then crank the sh!t out of your steering wheel. (I've never tried it before, but if we're resorting to brute force and ignorance as I often do, it just might work). Strip it!!

Chock the wheels on your car, chain the rack to your mom's car, and pull.

Make your brother do it.
