BRIDGEPORT -- The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs agreed Monday to pay $925,000 to a man whose eyeball exploded during a routine outpatient cataract operation at the West Haven Veterans Affairs hospital.
The settlement, on behalf of 60-year-old Jose Goncalves, of Hartford, was reached as the case was being prepared for trial in U.S. District Court here.
"Jose suffered excruciating pain after that botched surgery and continued to have severe pain for months afterward," said Christopher Bernard, Goncalves' lawyer. "The damage to the eye is obvious because his iris is missing and his eyelid droops. If anything should ever happen to the undamaged left eye, he could face total blindness."
Veterans Affairs did not immediately return calls for comment.
According to the lawsuit, Goncalves was blinded in his right eye when a third-year resident at the VA hospital incorrectly administered an anesthetic during the Nov. 1, 2007, procedure.
Bernard said Dr. Yue Michelle Wang, the resident, incorrectly placed a needle with a local anesthetic "directly into Jose's eye instead of behind the eye as was proper. Then, failing to recognize her error, she proceeded to inject so much anesthetic, so quickly, that Jose's eye literally exploded."
Goncalves, who had worked as a roofer prior to the injury, now suffers from a significant lack of depth perception, making him completely unable to resume his previous occupation, Bernard said.
He now works in the maintenance department at Central Connecticut State University.

Second, you said after having mastered that mountain of material you won't pass your boards/obtain licensure. That makes no damn sense. The whole point of the game is to master the material, which in itself IS the difficult part. Once accomplished, passing the boards - which test exactly your understanding of the material which you just mastered - isn't that difficult.
Then again you're probably a pro at what it takes to become a licensed medical doctor. /sarcasm

There are alot of people that get to medical school and yet can't pass the boards after they've graduated all that fun stuff in the States. I don't know why they can't pass the boards, but they can't... Or, they've written it like 3 ****ing times and still haven't passed it.

I disagree with his opinion as there is a distinguished difference between a genius and someone who has the discipline to sit down and just memorize stuff and then regurgitate it.

That is correct, you do not need to be a genius to be a doctor. Memorize text books and material is not an easy feat. Understanding and memorizing are not the same thing. Memorizing and LEARNING are not the same thing.
Lets look a little closer here, I like how you throw the word “Understand” which is a term I never used. In my entire argument I said memorize mounts of stuff, not UNDERSTAND. You said understand.

Nope. I never said that said person HAS MASTERED the material. You don’t need MASTERY to pass medical school. Infact you don’t need mastery to pass your boards. However, what does make sense is that you can FAIL you boards even if you pass medical school. This is a fact. I know this for a fact as I have worked for 3 months recruiting American doctors and I spoke to a few that have no yet passed their boards and have written them several times.

Im not sure if youre the actual one of the doctors on these boards. I know there is 1 on here, I cant remember who. Personally, I doubt its you because you don’t have the writing ability and comprehension to become a doctor I don’t think. But I could be wrong, so if you are a doc, please let us know. Then you would be proving me right, that there are a lot of C- doctors out there
