2003- e46, 10-w40 the best for summer or any other suggestions?

Been discussed more times than I care to think of.

All year round - Mobil 1 0W40, German Castrol Syntec 0W30 or BMW dealer 5W30.

End of story.

Any zero weight oil will ruin your motor. You will burn oil after 300km.
It's fine for a Honda. Not for a BMW.

I hope you dont go 25,000 km on your oil change, like BMW recommends, either. 8-10k on synthetic.. Max.

There is a lot of debate on this and my view is that the mileage for older oils is not the same for newer oils. Remember, the 25,000 that the BMW computer flashes at you is not 25,000 actual km but something the computer adjusts depending on car usage. I've seen it jump 50km for each start of the car each morning.

Do a little google searching on oil changes and fleet cars (i.e. rentals, buses, taxis, etc). These vehicles get mega mileage and usually get an oil change every 20-25,000 kms.

There is a guy on e46fanatics whose been getting his oil tested at certain intervals to see how it's doing. Very interesting to note this quote:

"Changing the oil before this point would result in the process having to start over again. For the first 3k miles or so, the benefits of the tribochemical films formed (as stated by the article) are not yet present, and the magnitude of wear would be increased."

The opinion given seems that frequent, lower mileage changes are having the opposite effect--not helping but wearing engine components.

Given the oil may in fact last 20-25km, I often wonder if the filter is not the real issue. Perhaps oil filter change at 10k and oil at 20 is an ideal solution.

A 10w40 and 0w40 will be at same viscosity and wear rate at normal running temps. The 0w40 will be thinner on startup, which is better for engine wear (though you will burn slightly more on startup seeing as how its thinner than a 10w). I hardly see how this will ruin your motor.

Definitely agree with your change interval though.

Your oil change interval advice is sound, you are talking out of your ass on the rest.

No 10w40 oil is BMWLL-01 Approved. Plus I don't know of a readily available 10W40 weight oil that meets the minimum specs that these cars need. ACEA A3.

Don't get so hung up on weight. Oils from different brands with the same listed weight still test differently (Mobil 1 0W40 actually acts like high end 30 and Castrol 0W30 is closer to a 40)

The most important thing with oils on modern BMW's is specs like HTHS (high temp shear), you should be looking at oil with a HTHS of higher than 3.5.

ACEA A1 & A5 oils which most off the shelf oil fall under do not meet this requirement.

The German Castrol 0W30 is widely regarded as one of the best oils on the market.

Therefore for the average driver you should be looking for BMW LL-01 approval which in Canada makes the 3 oils I listed as most easily attainable.

Oil and intervals are a dead issue... Use what is recommended, and change between 7000km and 10km...

Now for a REAL QUESTION: When a BMW uses lifetime fluid, does that mean it should never be changed? And what if i want to change it, will it damage my transmission?

BMW 5w30 synthetic burns. I had to keep adding constantly until I changed brands again.

Every time I see someone recommending a 10W40 for an E46, it makes me laugh.

Such clueless people.

OP, open up your owners manual , read it and do what it says. If you dont have one , please care to spend a few seconds to download it. After that, move away from this board, unless you want to hear advice from strangers who drive completely different cars.
