Paint safe to polish?

I have a question for the pros on the forum: I think my paint is in rough shape as there are some dime sized rough patches (coarse on touch) on my hood and roof. I wanted to polish the entire car but not sure if this process would only contribute to the problem.

Looking to clay, polish, and seal in the next couple of weeks. My car hasn't been properly detailed since I've owned it, approx 6 years.
