this reactor got hit with an earthquake, a tsunami and uninformed fear mongerers on the internet, and still didn't go nuclear? What more do you people want, geez.

Maddow Explains How Spent Nuclear Rods (no longer cooled & exposed to air) Could Be More Dangerous Than The Exploded Reactors

Quote:
Radioactive Water from Chalk River Nuclear Plant contaminates Ottawa River

Harper government allows 7,000 litres of potentially carcinogenic waste water to be dumped in major Canadian waterway

The Stephen Harper's government lack of social responsibility on environmental matters has once again surfaced through an immediate public health threat.

A radioactive spill has occurred at the aging Chalk River nuclear reactor west of the nation's capital after the facility was recently cranked up to double its normal output of medical isotopes, used in diagnosing and treating cancer, Sun Media has learned.

The Conservative Party handling of this public health threat is grounds in itself to out them through a non-confidence motion.. The reactor is supplying up to 70% of the world's medical isotopes, and a shutdown could leave millions of cancer and heart patients in Canada and around the globe without critical treatments.

But the radioactive spill and another ongoing leak at the reactor are bound to spark renewed controversy over the safety of the nuclear facility built in 1958.

An internal report to federal nuclear regulators shows radioactive tritium was released into the air during the incident at the Chalk River reactor on Dec. 5.

Atomic Energy of Canada officials running the 51-year-old apparently defective reactor reported they managed to contain another 800 litres of contaminated water now being stored in special drums.

The report alleges there was no threat to the health of workers at the reactor, and officials say the tritium released into the air posed no significant danger to the surrounding environment.

Nonetheless, after a brief shutdown, the reactor has continued to operate at full power, even though Chalk River officials admit they don't know what caused the leak, and say it could happen again.

Documents indicate officials at Atomic Energy took four days to report the spill to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.

Even then, the spill proved to be five times larger than what the officials initially reported.

They didn't go out of their way to inform the public, either.

A press release about the brief shutdown of the reactor in December made no mention of a spill, only "unanticipated technical challenges."

Radioactive water leak in the human drinking supply of water

Meanwhile, another part of the reactor has sprung a water leak from a 2.4-inch crack in a weld. That leak has not been repaired since it was first reported more than six weeks ago. Instead, technicians are simply pumping water into the unit to replace the estimated 7,000 litres a day spewing from the cracked seam.

In answer to written questions from Sun Media, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission said the leaking water from the failed weld has "a very low level of radioactivity" and is not a safety concern.

The water is being dumped into the Ottawa River.

so google mox reactors - and learn how 'extra green' & 'eco friendly' they are, they burn 'weapons grade plutonium & depleted uranium'

This is the dumbest thread ever. This is like CNN getting guys on TV talking about it when they aren't even Nuclear Engineers but! they say they are Nuclear Experts ahahaha... I laugh at how dumb people sound sometimes. The reactor is perfectly, nothing more then people just being extra cautious. Darlington and Pickering has the same reactors.

This is a serious matter and the world is or should be concern
and the Japanese goverment and engineers and with help
from nuclear specialists from other countries are doing their very
best to contain the situation.

Lets hope there will be no major after shocks that will worsen the situation...

Potassium iodide tablets .. anyone??? and who says we dont learn something new everyday ....

health professionals are saying to stay away from iodide tablets for now as they pose more of a risk taking them then not.

imo, this is being blown way out of proportion by the media. they had some what of a dry run with the charlie sheen thing so the earthquake and nuclear issues is something they can run with for a while and kind of use a scare tactic to draw in ratings.
furthermore, the plant has containment zones that if a meltdown did occur, it would be contained. i believe they can get control of this and minimize damage.
one last thing, that picture is cut off. it should be this pic. take a look at the bottom line. also note that none of japan gets hit with nuclear radiation. which is odd since its where the meltdown would have happened. i'm pretty sure also they are putting it as a full meltdown and full exposure of the fuel rods.

and cause i haven't posted here in a long time, the canadian nuclear sites that have canadians on edge and terror are not susceptible to major earthquakes, tsunamis, massive tornados, or hurricanes. yet the same safety regulations will apply. keep in mind, this nuclear plant is around 40 years old, it survived many major earth quakes and a tsunami and explosions.

interesting pic, odd though - never seen the gulf stream diagonal across the pacific...

the media has been saying some wildly conflicting things, like they're bi-polar.
but then you mention 'containment zones' did they have a glass dome over the thing or something im not noticing? I mean when some1 Farts their underwear and pants should contain it! a double containmen zone. but yet you still smell it. theres radiation all over

speaking of local...

Ontario Power Generation notified Canada's nuclear regulator that there was a release of 73-thousand litres of demineralized water at the Pickering 'A' nuclear generating station. but don't worry enviro-priests say nuclear water is extra happy fun health time for you & whole family - glory to the leader

BREAKING (early 16th) ! Japanese Citizens Now Being Instructed To Move Away From a SECOND completely Different Nuclear Power Plant! alex jones was on this on sunday!

'uncooled rods burst into flames, while melting & release mega rads'
its so safe, so green, so globalist & so enviro friendly!

containment zone as in if the rods melted, they'd drop down into a enclosed area so nothing would escape that area. forget where i saw the video but it's on youtube somewhere how they broke down how everything works and safety parts of the plant.

the media is again blowing stuff out of proportion. Japan is about 10,000km from NA. I survived Chernobyl from 700km away.

on a side note....everything in california has a disclaimer about causing cancer anyway.

I like how the media reports that Reactor #4 has no water left and then the officials in Japan say that's completely false. This stuff angers me. Why report false accusations and make the world panic about something that we get the from the sun on a daily basis anyways? I'm more worried about Gamma rays then Radiation. That stuff can't be stopped period where radiation can be contained.
