She's all fixed up!

Had the head shaved last week. they had to take off 0.015"!

Bottom end with new HeadGasket on:

And all back together:

(Sorry for crappy cell phone pics)

I managed to get it all back together last friday night/saturday in order to make the autoX event on sunday, however due to a leaky thermostat housing, was unable to run it.

Something i had'nt thought through was since the thermostat housing is aluminum, when the engine overheated, it most likely warped the housing as well.

Anyways, Should be ready to go for this weekends event

Small updated: Some interior goodies!!

Finally got the wideband O2 sensor in with the AFR Gauge. Also wired in a fan switch inside the car. Big thanks to Jamie for helping with the wiring.

This week Jamie also took on the challenge of designing and fabricating a race shifter. This eliminates the stock shifter arm. instead it is bolted directly to the tranny tunnel, making it much more stable. The throw is crazy short and it sits right up close the the steering wheel.

Here it is installed (forgot to take pictures of it before install. i was just too anxious to try it out!)

Just need to figure something out for shift knob.

Awesome work Jamie!! Can't wait to give it a go this weekend at Bogie!!

Nice shifter.I kinda looking for a long knob to bring it that high.I hope you have solid engine and transmision mounts or when you gonna want to shift you may not gonna find the shifter or it can even pop out fron gear.

That shifter position is great. (TSK? )

Anyway, +1 to what George said (though I am sure you thought of that). A quick vid of the shifter in action would be awesome. That could be the highest, most left / forward position I've seen in an E30 even amongst the rally E30 crowd. Kudos.

I'm glad the install went well and the result is a good one!

As mentioned, I wouldn't recommend this for a driveline with any significant movement under cornering load. Chris has solid mounts all around, so he'll be good.

The design intention was to place the knob close to wheel height while keeping the throw to a minimum. I think a good balance was achieved.

Now I just need a new tranny and clutch so I can install mine.

A bit of an update.

Thursday September 8th i decided to give the Calabogie Gentlemans GT Race a shot. They have been doing these races all season and this one happened to be the last one of this season so i wanted to give it a go to see how i would class up. We get a single qualifying lap to place, followed by a 50 min race with point-by passing. I managed to qualify 2nd, however 2 laps into the race, the car crapped out on me. Coming down the front straight, i first noticed that i lost powersteering. Then the engine started to overheat. So i pulled out, and it turns out the water pump let go so the belt came off. Needless to say this was the unfortunate end to my race.

I knew that i had low compression in cylinder 3, but after overheating the engine, i wanted to check it out again. So last week, before Saturday's autoX, i re-checked compression. turns out, i now have low compression in cylinder 3,4, AND 5.. Ok well might as well run it saturday and hope for the best! The car ran great all day saturday without problems, and still seemed to pull hard enough.

Sunday i decided to do a leakdown test to see exactly what is wrong with the engine. I knew the headgasket was leaking, but i really wanted to see what shape the bottom end was in. Turns out the engine was in REALLY bad shape as it was leaking between 20% and 65% through all the cylinders. And alot of that was coming out of the dipstick which indicates a bottom end issue.

So long story short, engine is back out of the car. after seeing these results, i decided to just pull the engine and get going on a rebuild.

Last shot of it in the car:

2-1/2 hours later:

The last event i was hoping to do was Mosport Thanksgiving weekend, however with the engine in this bad of shape, i would rather not spend the money hauling the car up there for the chance of it blowing on me. So i will be getting a head start on the winter work.

Good to see you Saturday.. at least you got a beautiful day of running at auto-x.

What's the plan, just refresh or more displacement, etc?
