High NO in Etest and failed

I know it's pointing to a bad cat, but could it be something else? Or can I bandaid the problem by retarding the timing or something to just pass the test and then put the timing back?

any helpful hints or help would be greatly appreciated!

Or if it is the cat, anyone got a good cheap one around???? LOL.

Unfortunately, you can't change the timing in these cars. It's in the chip.

take your ICV out and clean the inside good with rubbing alcohol and Q-tips.

put some 91 oct in + 2 bottles of injector cleaner.

run the car up and down the highway and go WOT blow shit out.

then go etest while hot hot hto.

I would recommend SeaFoam additive instead of injector cleaner. Use as directed, I passed with nearly no detectable emissions after nearly failing the years earlier.

SeamFoam ftw,

Also what el gato said, test hot.

even go on "training" while on the machine and let the car warm up abunch.

If you're failing due to NOx, it might actually be better to test it cold if you're close to passing. High NOx levels are related to high combustion temps, usually resulting from a lean condition (vacuum leaks, bad injector, etc).

Does the M20 use an EGR valve? I was chasing the same problem with an M42 last year but that motor does not have an EGR system and relies solely on the cat (and proper AFRs) to regulate NOx levels. If the M20 has one then you might look in that direction, as that's what it's there for, AFAIK.

No EGR on the M20.

methyl hydrate will dramatically reduce your NO

Could you post your e-test results as well as the age of your emmisions components? that'll really help identify a potential solution here. I dont know you or your set up... if you have some kind of A/M intake/air filter...etc.
Let's see what your margins are for CO and HC too... chemically altering your fuel aint a bad idea but its pointless to reduce your NOx and fail HC and CO

hmm. I've never had a car fail with methyl hyrdrate mixed in with the gas,
and its passed all but one car that we tried it on (about 85% success rate)

Frankly, i'd be more worried about doing damage to the motor than failing.

leveling off at a respectable 85% success rate?

If he used about 2L to an eigth of a tank and then filled up after to dilute then that minimizes the corrosive effects... still dont know his numbers though....that'll be a good indicator.

Methyl hydrate will NOT lower NOx. It burns hot and will help to lower HC/CO if you're running rich, but will send NOx through the roof, especially if you're already running lean or if you use too much.

It wont really send the NOx through the roof nick... there are still so many varibles into using this stuff and its outcomes.. if anything NOx may decrease slightly because the meth burns so much cleaner and it's less volitile than gasoline

Just run Seafoam. My co and nox were nearing their limits, but a can of Seafoam and a hot cat gave me 0.02 CO (!) and 25 NOx.

It will be interesting to see how my turbo passes this year.

I'm wondering the same thing. I had my car classed as a "hot rod" last time with the M30 engine swap and so only have to meet minimal etest requirements...much higher thresholds than the standard for an 88 m20.
