540i - m5 engine swap
Tried the search and did not find any dedicated thread to this topic. Can anyone direct me to some detailed information on putting a m5 engine into my 2001 54oiA?
Thanks
Will it bolt right in?
Will the transmission I already have work?
Will the computer work, can it just be reflashed?
Will the wiring harness work, will I need the m5 harness, will I need to do some custom wiring?
will my cooling system work?
Am I forgetting anything?

It will be cheaper AND easyer to just buy an M5. It's not an easy swap, you have to change everyting!

Might there be an easier way and possibly less expensive way to encourage another say 100hp from my 540 engine?

That is confirmation that the best thing to do is get an M5. It will be less hassle in the end than dealing with a sc buy and installl and then the maintenance after.

Just went back to the Dinan site to grab you a link to their supercharger that was listed at about 12k, the web page no longer exists.
http://www.dinancars.com/bmw-products/540i-supercharger
Can you supply me with a link for a supercharger set-up for $5500?

I use to have a 98 540i, and was planning on a S/C, the Dinan one is way overpriced & under powered compared to the other options.
http://www.vf-engineering.com/ has them for $6000
ESS Tuning also had a S/C for the 540, but they don't sell them anymore, but you might be able to find a used one.

Is your 540 manual or auto? Buddy, ECU scan make sure everything’s running right Tranny and engine, cold air intake, New Plugs (NGK), Bav Auto High power Ignition coils (wait until they go on sale), Fuel filter change, injection clean, Alignment so the cars not running against itself, Mark D tune, and you will rip an e36 M3, Never mind Non “M” e39’s.

Sorry to rain on your parade but a stock e39 6speed should outrun an e36 m3...please correct me if i am wrong.
+1 for supercharger...Paxton's seem to go on like the ESS and VF...I cant belive no one has tried to fabricate a mount for a Paxton...these sell for less than 1k used..Then you need the Fuel injectors, map, etc..but thats the cheap way to start
