rattle can paint match

hey guys,

normally I would go to Cawthra Automotive in Mississauga to pick up rattle cans for parts that I paint and they come out matching very well...

I recently picked up my e46 sedan and there are two minor rust spots...one bubbling on the bottom of the door trim or whatever it is...and a larger rust spot in the rear on the small lining between the trunk lid and the rear bumper :S
I'm not sure if this is has rotted through but it's about an inch wide

I plan to repaint the car after the winter...so for now I was looking to sand it down, primer, paint, clear and wetsand it throughout the process...

anyway, my question is, I believe my car is steel grey metallic(paint code 400). I have to double check the code under the hood. I just got the car and haven't actually looked at the paint code, but based on pics online, that's what it should be...

anybody here ever bought a rattle can paint from canadian tire or rona's or other major chain that closely matches? being that these two spots I'll be repainting are generally hidden, I don't mind if it's a little off, as long as I get to the rust...

driving to Cawthra is pretty far...so I'd like to just find something local and cheap as this is a temporary fix

if not, i guess i'll be the first to experiment haha

try other automotive shops - carquest, napa etc - they all make spray can matched paints.

hey, thanks, I just called both...

so carquest told me that no shops in canada can mix paint?

well he said until the new paint comes out...and when I asked what that meant, he said that there is a law that has been passed not allowing mixing of some solvent based paint..which is what paint shops use to mix custom paint...not sure if this is "car" specific paint or whatever, but that's what he said...i'd have to order from the states or get touch up paint from dealers....

so yea...I guess i'm back to the original question:

has anyone here bought a spray can paint from canadian tire, rona's, wal-mart etc that matches steel grey metallic closely? I remember for my old civic back in the day, my wrx as well, they sold a specific colour at canadian tire and wal-mart respectively, which was almost spot on..so hoping there's someone that has this experience with bmw colours...

i'll be going to look on my day off thursday...just hoping there's a response from an experienced person here before then haha..otherwise i'll post my findings to help out others that may find themselves in a similar situation.
