I was hoping this thread was never going to come around, just a matter of time i guess.
Alright, YES it's true.
My car was infact stolen last June 8th in Montreal. I was invited by fellow BMW enthusiast Lee Vuong to show my car at Bimmernights held downtown Montreal on that Formula 1 weekend. I drove up with M50E30 Friday afternoon, got a hotel for the weekend and went downtown to enjoy the Formula 1 festivities. I parked the car in a secluded residential street and we walked a few blocks to St.Catherine's. 2 hours later I return to an empty parking spot! Police made a report and told me that I couldn't have chosen a worse neighbourhood.
I didn't tell anyone because of a few reasons... embarrassment, anger, shock and most of all, hope that it would be found and all would be good. The border crossings were checked, aswell as the Montreal Docks... but no luck. Insurance gave me a real hard time for 5 months trying to convince me that my baby was only worth $6000.00.
I'm sorry that I lied to a lot of you, but I was really hoping everyone would forget it and I could just say that I sold it to someone in the U.S. for parts or something??? There was a point before X-mas that I was on the verge of announcing it, but then Dado's car went missing in NYC, so I held off some more.
So, that's the story.... let the comments begin:

Sorry to hear about the bad incident Randy.
I've been a fan of your car since the day Dado released a video (back then known as bmwmpower.net) of you driving on the freeway. I believe it was the Superstreet tour.
But I guess you did what you felt was comfortable in terms of nofiying the rest of us eventually and not when it happened right away.
I really miss that E30 and as always, it's so weird how someone's car can get stolen like that and never to be found, such as Bimmersport's incident. In some ways it makes you wonder if there's any point to have a really done up car b/c someday someone will find out where you live and may pull the same thing off they did to you guys. But I guess we tend to keep that idea off our minds most of the time.

phew!! One less secret for me to keep!
It was damn hard for me to keep a straight face, or avoid the topic whenever your car came up in a discussion with other board members.
I hope everything gets cleared up with your insurance company though. I wouldn't settle for 6 grand!

heh I'm wondering how many people actually knew it. Sounds like everybody knew and everybody kept it as a secret.

about a dozen or so people knew, and did a damn good job of keeping it to themselves! Thanks.... The Montreal Police told me that stolen cars that aren't recovered within the first 4 hours are rarely ever found because they go straight to a shipping container or chop shop (providing it's not just 15yr olds going for a joy ride). All I can say is that from now on, all my cars will have Boomerang systems installed.... no more of this bullshit.

What do you think is paying for the GT-2 project.....??
It must have been a decent insurance settlement after all was said and done.
No offense, but that was about the WORST kept secret in the local BMW community.
Pat
On a side note, it's a good reason for an agreed upon value clause / rider in an insurance policy. You'll pay a little more for it (about 1% of agreed upon value), but they'll just give you the agreed upon value upon theft etc.
