Exploding E39 cooling systems!

Ok, not really but my car burst a hose or something tonight. I'm puzzled because I'm really not sure where it was leaking from.

As I pulled away form a stop sign, the car stumbled and left a trail of coolant and started to spew steam from the engine bay.

When I pulled over to find the leak, I couldn't see it. It was spraying coolant all over the road from the back of the block. I'm hoping it's just a heater hose...

So yeah, got the car towed to the local indie and we'll see what they say. I fully intended to do everything on this car but I really couldnt tell where this leak was coming from.

Any guesses? I'll update when the mechanic calls tomorrow. Correct guess gets a virtual cookie.

I'll that a stab....if it is spraying and it is at the back of the engine bay it would be a heater hose. There is one hose towards the passenger side with a bend at the top that always develope a pin hole leak in almost the same spot in the bend. The pin hole leak is hard to spot if the cooling system is cold or enough coolant has leaked out so there is little to no pressure. If you had duct tap with you you could have taped it up and limped home... but who wants to take the chance eh.

Heater hose sounds like it to me but I don't know as much as others on here as it is.

When my system blew it was the radiator and associated hoses. I floored it from a green light to beat traffic from the light since my lane was ending, and it was a very hot day so that had an effect too probably. Pretty embarrassing when you fly by everyone only to be passed by them 30 seconds later with steam everywhere.

I also saw an e38 yesterday parked on the curb with a large trail of coolant behind it.

Such a well designed system.

You may want to have a look at your left motor mount when that comes apart from the torque it lifts and tugs hard on the hoses and rad during hard acceleration.

The E38 does have some of the same cooling system problems but the hoses are longer so probable has less rad neck breakage than the E39.

Heater hose but not the one's I suspected. Apparently it runs from the left of the block to a water tube or something.

They had a hard time sourcing from the dealer, found one from their jobbers. Rejoice!

I replaced the hose MLue1 is referring to. It had a pinhole and was giving off steam at the back of the hood. The firewall was wet as well but I did manage to bring it home.

Getting the part from the dealer was a pain. The diagrams they have of the hoses back there aren't the best.
