I've fallen hard for the E30! What to do

I've owned a few BMWs and a slew of Volkswagens in my past. Most notable (and memorable to me) were my 1992 VW GTI and 1999 BMW M Coupe.

I'd like to combine both the class of the Bimmer with the retro allure of a dub. I figured the E30 is pretty much my answer!

My main inspiration has always been this black beauty:

I adore Alpine White II also, and the Red (what's the official name of the bright red?)

What kind of advice could you offer a newbie? I've read the "What to look for when buying an E30", lots of useful info there. One question that comes to mind: I know now that the 1990 model comes with the ugly airbag steering wheel. Is this easily removable to replace it with an Mtech or regular "is" steering wheel?

I'm on my long quest to find the perfect 1989-1991 E30 325is! Can't wait to find my next car love affair

The 90-on airbag story was only with American models. In Canada the airbag was always an option, and if you didn't choose it you got an M-Tech II wheel in iS models.

OMG!!! That is the best bit of news I've heard today. Thank you Mystikal

The M-TechII steering wheel is definitely a hot commodity.

Do some research into parts costs so that you know how much fixing everything will be. Unless you're buying from an enthusiast who has babied the car, be prepared to do some overdue maintenance.

Bright Red I believe is Hellrot.

Alpine is the best colour or shade I should say.

Hellrot is an E36 colour.

Most common E30 Reds are Zinnoberrot and Brillantrot. Some early cars are Hennarot, but that's pretty rare.

I think you mean M-Tech I, Tech II would be found in the european sport models. I could be wrong, but thats my experience with my cars, my first e30 was a loaded 325is and came with a tech 1 wheel.

Also if you want to compare reds, mine is zinnoberrot, and rudy's (the post above mine) is brilliantrot. Here's a picture of my car in front of his. You will find that most late models (88-91) are brilliant, although mine is a 90 and is zinno.

Nope, 90+ should all be M-tech II. My car was delivered from the factory this way too, fwiw.
