Driveshaft problems

I've been experiencing a knocking noise coming from what I thought was the universal joint. I'm trying to buy the part but I'm told it's not a universal, it's a flex disc. Does anybody know the part name where the driveshaft connects to the transmission? Thanks in advance, I don't want to order a part I might not need.

it is called flex joint or guibo - brand zf (german made) part is around $80 + tax

UNIVERSAL JOINT and Flex Disk are the same
If you go to a dealership you need this part number:26111227410
but I think you can buy aftermarket and it's cheaper

Most certainly they are not. A flex disc (guibo) is a chunk of rubber. A U joint is a mechanical piece with a cross bar and some circlips. Some e36 driveshafts have U joints on the diff end (come have CVs). All have a flex disc at the tranny end.

yeah ,but if you take a look on realoem...:

...and this part number is the flex disk...
I know witch one is the U joint and witch one is the flex disk on the drive shaft
just saw yesterday on realoem and I was surprised

do your carrier bearing while you have the shaft out!

In case anyone thinks that's a u joint as well , it's not! Its the center mount for the driveshaft. and +1 on richie_s999's comment. If your guibo goes it usually means the center mount is taking a beating now. I wonder which one affects the other like which one is the initial culprit. Probably the guibo right?

9/10 the vibration is the center hanger bearing (bmw referred name) squeak is usually the rear u joint. if the driveshaft vibrates on acceleration it's most likely the center hanger bearing. If the driveshaft knocks against the floor pan then you have a u-joint problem and probably some other serious issue.
But if one begins to fail it is only a matter of time before the guibo, u-joints and output shaft seal from the tranny begins to leak. If you let it go way to long you'll most likely be in for a rebuilt driveshaft and/or rebalanced. and a host of potentially other repairs. from my experience.

im still learning.. so what does his bearing do? n where is it located?? it might be the one im about to replace...

The flex disk conects your trans output to the drive shaft

The carrier or hanger bearing is in the middle of your driveshaft and attaches to the top of the driveshaft tunnel to hold it secure

Once you unbolt the drive shaft from the guibo(front) and from the diff you unbolt the center hanger bearing bracket from the floor body of the car and then you need to split the shaft to take the bearing off to replace it.
